Yup FDO is great. If you want to catch somebody there, call a little later. The owners both work 9-5 jobs. Installed the FDO headstuds in my 440 and haven't blown a gasket since. Well, the wheeler hasn't blown a gasket, I've been known to have an attitude:rolleyes:

can you install these youself? does the head have to be drilled? and how much r they?

When i looked into putting them in my 440, FDO said told me not to use helicoils. Instead the thread needs to be roll formed. My advice would be unless you're a machinist, I wouldn't do it. Roll formed threads are much stronger than cut threads, therefore they won't pull out easily.

Crawl69 knows what he's talking about. When I built my 416 I was curious about the oversize headstuds as well. FDO explained it to me the way they machine the larger opening. Their 'bit" they use doesn't actually remove any material rather it forces it into the surrounding walls making the walls more dense which equals better holding power.

FDO studs are $70, but for an extra $30 or so they'll machine the new opening as well. Worth every penny.

Any machinist can do it for you. I stood there and watched a coworker do the machining on a bridgeport. It's simply drilling the holes to the correct depth for a 7/16 14 standard thread. It took about 45 minutes plus cleaning of the cylinder. Not hard, save the $30 and shipping costs.

Very good way to spend 100 dollars if you have high compression. You'll probably end up spending the $100 on head gaskets if you dont get oversized studs. I got mine from rocky ridge racing

It's not that big of a deal if you're a machinist and have access to the equipment. I happen to be a tool and die maker, so I did it on my lunch break. I did mine in a radial arm drill press and there hasn't been a problem yet. Try a local machine shop, If they have the tap, they'll probably only charge you $30. If they don't have the tap, you can order it from J&L Industrial Supply. www.jlindustrial.com (http://) Hope this helps.

I think it is a M12 x 1.25 roll form tap that you must use, is this correct?

I can't remember off the top of my head, I still have the tap in my toolbox at work.
