1. Remove the retaining screws and tap the core free from the housing. Use a plastic mallet and a wood block to prevent marring the components.

2. Clean the core with a wire brush. This packing had been in use for about 20 hours and shows signs of burning.

3. Fit the new packing material to the core. Packing that is slightly long will push away from the end during installation. If necessary, trim packing with common scissors.

4. Wrap the core snugly, but not too tight. It must still breathe to work. Excessively tight packing may reduce performance

5. Tape the packing into place. Use only enough masking tape as necessary to allow you to slide the freshly packed core into the muffler housing. Other types of tape may hold the packing but could leave an undesirable residue.

6. Slide the core and packing into the housing. Apply high-temp silicone sealer around the end-cap and tap the cap into place. Replace the screws and allow the sealer to set.

I already had the whole pipe apart. I was just wondering if the rivets were 1/8 or 3/16 because, they didnt drill out wiht the 1/8 so we used a 3/16 to finsh them. I was wondering if i was supposed to drill them out withthe 3/16. I was just wondering if anyone could give me a reference on how tight to roll the packing. (like, should it beable to move just slightly on the core and how tight should it fit inside the actual pipe) oh and i forgot to mention when i took it apart it had zero packing there was one little piece at the front of the silecer about 1 1/2" long

btw thanks sga that would have helped alittle before i took it apart but oh well i got it done

I've repacked a few pipes, just wrap the packing snugly. Its not rocket science.

Take the pipe to the hardware to match the rivets. Rivets should fit the hole correctly. If you use a 3/16 drill, then use 3/16 rivets.

pick you up some s.s. self tapping sheet metal screw and replace your rivets with those works a heck of alot better plus it will make next times repacking a world easier ;)
