I sold my 99' 400ex last Saturday and bought an 03' Z400 on Sunday. The guy that I got it from bought it new and rode it 4 times for about 2 hours each time, needless to say, it is like new. I got a steal on it too. Anyhow, after riding it for his last time, he parked it in his garage and let it set without putting any kind of gas treatment or conditioner in it. I took the carb apart on it and it was full of green gunk. I cleaned everything up as good as I could with it still on the motor, but it still has a miss in it. I suppose I will just have to break down and tear it completly off and do it right. My question to you guys is this, is there any kind of additive that I could add to a tank of gas to clean the junk out of it? I took the jets out and cleaned them with a welding tip cleaner and used an air compressor through all of the holes. I am certain that I missed some.

Maybe I should just get a new carb??? Any suggestions on which kind and size? How much difference would an aftermarket carb make in power? Thanks guys...Here are a few links to pics of my new baby.

SWEET!..............It does look new. Did you give alot for it? Yeah, its not good for quads to sit for a long time especially with no additives in the fuel. I would take the carb off and totally go through it................Wanna race! ;)

I'd at least drain the gas that was in it, drain your bowl of your carb and go over everything in it, it should all be fine if there are any deposits just use some carb cleaner.

Your talking about cat whisker's right?? They're pieces of wire that you shove in an acetylene torch to clean the tip out, right?? Most ATV manuals say not to stick anything into your jets to clean them as this will affect the flow rate through the jets. Your only supposed to use compressed air and carb cleaner. You might of gotten lucky and not harmed the jets but next time you shouldn't use that method.

Check to make sure your petcock is clean too, I had the same problem with my Banshee. I will probably be replacing my petcock as it has been sitting a long time and I can't seem to get it clean enough or it's just not putting enough fuel through, does anyone know of any aftermarket petcocks for quads?

go to the auto parts store and get you a gallon of carb. parts cleaner. tear the carb. all the way down and put it in the cleaner and let it soak a good day or so, just be sure not to put any plastic parts such as the float and stuff in there. when you take it out rinse it with gas and blow thru all the jets and circuits in the carb. after you do this it should be good as new.
as for the tank drain it completly and rinse it out with fresh gas and get you a inline filter, just besure to check the filter regularly to see if its clogged.
i would go ahead a replace the plug too.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys.

04EXdude,
Thanks man, I am loving this machine. It feels soo much like my 400ex did. But it has 2 things that I like better than the EX.

1:
An updated engine that is snappier. It seems to have a little more tourqe than the EX did, but the top end is about the same. (I had an exhaust, K&N, and a jet kit in the EX)

2:
Reverse!!!!!

Dust_1503,
I did drain the tank, it was so bad that I could smell the dead gas from 6 feet away.

:eek2:

Aceman,
Yes, tip cleaners is what I used, for acetylene. You have a good point. Lucky I hope.
:)

Toadz400,
You have a good point too, I never thought about the petcock. They normaly have screens in them too, I bet it is clogged as well. I will check it out tomorrow. Thanks.

Mojoe2878,
Someone told me about that stuff, if it doesnt start running right soon, I think that is what I will need to do.

BTW guys, I drove 2 hours away on Sunday to test drive a Raptor. I had my mind and heart set on buying one, but I'd never riden one before. Well, needless to say, I didnt like it at all. I was very dissapointed with it. It reminded me too much like the Yamaha Warrior I had, and I absolutely hated that thing. But I must say, it had gobs of tourque!!!!! It is definately a beast, but I just couldnt get used to the way it fealt. Than after riding the Z400 for about 5 minutes, I was sold. It is a very nice all around machine. It handles very well, and has alot of power on tap. I cant wait to add some goodies to it to make it breath better, I bet it has alot of potential.

When I cleaned my petcock I took it off (drain the tank of course) and blew the air hose through it (not the filter end). Tons of dirt/other unknown stuff came out, so you never know what yours will look like.
