I don;t know how fast they go but I got a good story about a guy I met that had a scrambler. He was in the proces of spray painting it all neon colors:p He claimed that he raced MX with it, and that it would beat all the quads of the people I was riding with. There was a predator, z-400, me on my 300ex, and a rancher. When we wanted to line all the quads up he *****ed out. After seeing him ride it looked like the rancher coulda beet him:macho

my scrambler is a 99 and it is 400....2-stroke,its nice but is it fast or not ...i think it is in my eyes but do u think i could out run a 400ex.?

YFZ450Ridr
11-12-2004, 03:42 PM
i think a 400ex would be a good race but scramblers have alota extra weight the 400ex doesnt so that could change the outcome of the race too.

polarisracer
11-12-2004, 08:58 PM
yea but the 400 scrambler would beat it on take off...because all u gotta do on the scrambler is put it in gear and give it gas...most likely i would smoke it....the 400ex has to worry about if the front end is going to come up or not...and alot has to with the rider and if the person the 400ex knows how to run a clutch...well what do u guys think...and also it depends on where ur racin if ur on the open road or in the woods..later

i would have to say the EX would win idk tho...the EX seams like its more racable than a scrambler...also auto quads a usally slower i believe:)

Stock there not fast, but the 400 2-Strokes can be made crazy fast..talkin 70+ HP without breaking too much of a sweat.

Hotseat performance and Aaen both make clutch kits for it, and exhausts that make a huge difference. They are faster then a stock 400ex. And you can double the stock hp output of the machine with motor work.

dude face it the Scrambler is 2stroke the 400ex is not..that gives the 400 scrambler more of a chance....think about that..and also the scrambler all it has to do is put it in gear and punch it...while the 400ex has to make sure they get the clutch just right off the line while i dont..so put that in ur pipe and smoke it..

12-08-2004, 07:28 PM
i think its around 35. Im selling my 500 now. it will BEAT a 400 EX. mines re geared with sidewinder sprockets and has a filter. its VERy quick. my old 400 scrammy was the fastest quad ive rode and i have rode some killer quads. it had 12 grand invested into it plus it was bored 2.5 over.

12-09-2004, 07:39 PM
could u tell me about how fast a 400 scrambler would go stock...also what do u think of the handling on it?..

Quadstud909
12-09-2004, 09:18 PM
Stock: Uh id guess 60's. capable of over 80.
handles well. mine was a 4x4 and i couldnt keep the front end together. but it handles nice. my 500 rides and drives like a cadillac. its very sweet, love the set up but id rather have shocks and double arms.

polarisracer
12-10-2004, 10:16 PM
yea there fast......mines 4x4 too.....also do u happen to know where i could get a sidecase?

Quadstud909
12-14-2004, 02:39 PM
just be sure to watch your swing arm bushings. mine wore alot. keep everything greased or youll get alot of problems. uh... just keep them maintained, they are high maintenence.

polarisracer
12-15-2004, 09:50 AM
Yeah i know that there high maintence...do they normally have any engine problems?

Quadstud909
12-15-2004, 02:17 PM
engine wise. just keep up on them. i blew mine twice. eventually ended up being bored to 2.5 over. make sure you let them warm up, if not your piston will scar bad.

polarisracer
12-16-2004, 09:51 AM
did u ever ever have problem with the carb on urs....? also do they normally start easy in the winter?...what else do u know about them?

Quadstud909
12-16-2004, 03:16 PM
winter? HAHA have fun trying to get it to run! mine never wanted to start. it took about 5 minutes untill it was hot to start up.

polarisracer
12-17-2004, 09:53 AM

I agree 100% My dad had a 1998 polaris scrambler 500 4x4 with a full aaen pipe, clutch kit, and K&N. It would not go the places a 300ex could go in the sand dunes. He bought a set of paddles and it bogged the engine down so bad he got ride of them. Whoever said a automatic is better for drag racing you dont know ****. A manual transmission is better any type of competitive racing period that is unless you dont know how to use one.

I will accept trades. $8,375 is what i get....you can't add the stock price of the tires and drive system since they come on the quad that you already paid for...you better come down to about $3,500 to start. you will have an easier time selling your quad if you remove all the after markit stuff and sell it stock, then sell the after markit stuff on ebay.

I have a stock scrambler 400 and a stock 400ex....in a drag race they are very close but the ex has a little better top end. 67mph vrs. 65 mph. the scambler has about 38 hp the 400ex has about 26.5 but the scambler wieghs an extra 100 lbs. and is alot harder on you at the end of the day. The motor on the scrabler has 10x more potential with mods for about half the cost. that's good if you want to drag race it. either way it's a good quad. you'll love it. good luck.

ill include my input i owned a crambler 400 for awhile and i plan on buying it back i put a decent amount of money into it and felt it was a really good quad it was actually really reliable for the abuse i put it through i was happy with it. I had it back when 400exs were in there prime, so i had plenty of opportunities to race them and i consistently won i had the same aftermarket parts as them (pipe, filter, jet kit,) they were close races but i would come out on top more, these were both long drags and short. My sister currently has it right now its pretty beat hopefully ill get it back really cheap and redo it. as for a good pipe ive tried dg and hotseat, the dg wasnt bad at all i think it actually made more power than the hotseat but i didnt have the clutch kit so that was the main reason i think, at least thats what hotseat told me. I really like the scrambler but i got myself an EX for woods racing. if ya got the money and wanna make the 450 boys cry go get yourself a 416 powermaxx kit for hpd:devil: also check out the polaris sport that was in atvsport a little while bat that thing looks like it would rock

For what its worth Scramblers are not junk, We have a stock Trailblazer 400 2003 that is plenty fast in stock form. And the guy down the road has a scrammy 500 that he has piped clutch kit and a high comp piston in it. And it would outrun my stock predator until I added my airbox mod and pipe. If you don't like shifting you will like the Auto Trans.... I like more control over my quad so I prefer manual trans. IMO a manual trans with a decent rider will always beat an auto trans in comparable machines.

i have buddies with both machines.i have a piped 250r,simple mods. 250r vs. 400ex(piped) beat by about 75 ft in 300ft. 250r vs. scrambler slight uphill 50ft. 400 scramblers are a fun ,comfortable, smooth bike to ride.little big,but its all in what you like to ride. i have a mojave as second ride, but the scrambler is easy to ride and good power.not crazy about the auto ,but it works. bottom line scrambler400 vs. 400 ex.....pretty close!!!! if they only could make em lighter, they would be mean with the 35 ish. hp they got!!!:macho

A guy mentioned Nicholas Cycle Earlier, well i am 30 miles away from them and not only do they know about Polaris, they can do any thing to just about any motor, Doug is a Predator genius tho they can get you some power out of a 400 scrambler, but itll cost ya, i see alot of people talkin about nicholas cycle and its weird cause, i remember when they were not very popular just gettin goin, any of you guys that know of them, would be surprised to see the shop, its small, in the middle of nowhere, but they sure do get it done, smart guys there. i go down there for just about anything i need but they dont have many other ATV parts on display although they can get them, good luck with your scramber im looking for a 2X4 scrambler frame to put a Ninja ZX600 in, since they are giant and steel, square tubing, easy to weld to.

the 400 scramblers and sports can make insane power, i have seen what they can do, i am about 30 min away from a place called nicholas cycle, some of you probably know the name, they use to primarily use the sport 400 for drag racing after working it over, and they were very successful with it. this was back when nicholas cycle was just a little shop, once the predator came out and doug nicholas started working his magic on the predator engine, they started bringing in lots of money, thats why they now have 3-4 different drag predators. sorry i got sidetracked, where im going here is, stock, the scrambler isnt very quick, for very little $ tho, you can have a ripper. alot cheaper to get the power out of a 400 2 stroke than a 400 4 stroke.

i had a 99 sport 400 bored to a 440,ported,42mm carb, everthing shaved 307 pounds, and i also had a 404 piston ,4mm crank, ported banshee that was also shaved down and the polaris would smoke the banshee up the face of sand mountain utah. and out on the flats the polaris would again kill it until the banshee got into 6th then slowly pass the polaris.

hey guys, take it from someone who has ridden both, bone stock in a drag race they run very close, depending on the rider, the EX may be alittle quicker but not more than 1/2 a tenth in 300ft, although the polaris responds better to mods than the 4 stroke EX, as far as a pipe goes ,, Aaen Top end pipe is really good for racing as is hotseat , although if you do alot of trial riding i like the dyno port pipe, it feels to me to have alot of torque .
i do think the EX drives better in the woods.
i have a 400 polaris with the aaen pipe , hpd 15.5:1 head, weisco piston, 38mm carb, and an assortment of clutch work. and is chopped and strutted for drag racing, it is very seldom that a race mod 400 EX outruns me.
--and for you guys that like to bash on automatics, i also have a 400 polaris frame cut and stretched with a 670 skidoo rotax motor on it, so show me a manual shift atv that will outrun it in the drag

Wait! how would you beat a 400 off the line when they have half @ssed throttle response! In my situation, my 250x beats a trailblazer like nothin. i figure the trailblazer would be like the scrabler and my 250 would be the EX. i even beat him like 2 days after i got it and couldnt hardly run a clutch!

wow your comparing a 250 polaris to a 400, that is rediculous. yes when both machines are stock the polaris is a little bit faster until they reach the top speeds, a good rider on a 400 EX can keep it pretty close though

now this is a funny thread to read. so ill continue the bench race.
the polaris is 2 stroke but its auto , even though all you have to do is give it gas. the 4 stroke 400 was made to take the place of the 250r.(didnt) as honda's race quad. and everyone thats not on a scrambler knows how to "use a clutch", the reason the ex has to worry about the front end comming up is because its taking off twice as fast as the polaris. and what ever you do dont try to keep up with the 400ex in the trails, or it will make you look really bad. I wonder why no one with the 400ex is asking if a polaris will keep up in a drag ? THEY ALREADY KNOW IT CANT !!
