ok here is what you NEED to make it work:
- piston kit ($120)
- gaskets ($40)
- get your cylinder bored ($30-50 depending on wher you take it)
- repair manual ($25)
give c&d racing a call and they will hook you up with the parts that you need they have great service and prices

here is what will help but is not a must:
- hotcam stage 2 for mx or stage 1 for xc or trails
- bigger carb
- exhaust and airfilter if you dont already have it
- bigger oil cooler or air scoops to help cool it down
- head port & polish

keep in mind that when you get the motor apart you may find that there are things you need to replace (i had to replace my rocker arms) you may also want whoever bores your cyl. to clean the head up a bit.

I think thats all

hope this helps I had the same questions when i built my 416 so dont hesitate to ask

Make sure you jet it properly. I would highly recommend a hotcam like stage 1 or 2.

you dont need a hotcam, torken2k1 does not know what he's talkin about

the cam isn't manditory but i would consider it a must. i would never ever put in a larger bore on a 400ex without changing out the stock cam. as a matter of fact, i would install just a cam before i would install just a piston.

I would agree with that cal.
