Looking to get a car withing the next two months..I'm torn between the Subaru WRX (2002) or and Audi A4 (1998-05). They are both AWD. The difference is that the WRX is a 2.0L Turbo and the Audi a 1.8L Turbo. Would be that much faster for the price difference? Also, if I get the Audi I may have money left over for a streetbike. Anyone every drive/own these cars? How did you like them? Thanks.

My best friend has Scooby WRX STI thats been modded pretty good. Last I knew he was at 350hp. That car is sick, and theres nothing like busting some all wheel drive donuts.

there both very good cars i would go with the audi just because i am a volkswagen driver and there the same company but either way there both nice both fast and u need to realize that if some thing breaks the parts are insanily expensive campared to any other car company you u pay top dollar for a machanic to work on 1 so in the long run buy the audi no street bike and save and wait cuz you'll need the cash in the future

my friend is selling a sweet a4 1.8 tuerbo. its basically brand new. Standard and some package on it with a better turbo and body styling or something. not sure exactly. Its like a 40g car though:eek:

his daddy bought him a brand new dodge ram 1500 so their getting rid of the audi.

I work at a subaru/Audi dealership and have driven bolth, I believe the Wrx is a little quicker.
Parts are much more expensive for the Audi.
Personally I prefer the A4 over the Wrx, unless your looking into the STI.
The Audi is much smoother driving, pretty decent power, a little bit of turbo lag but thats to be expected.

i think the guy that works there can back me up with your sti you can go wrong with that they stink in the rain because of the semi none tread tires and you feel ever bump that car needs to stay to the track ride quality and in that perspective not a comfutable every day ride audi will give you a nice ride with still being sporty enough to glue to the rode plus the interior is so nice comftable compared to the really firm seats in the wrx.

The Audi is one of the smoothest driving/operating car I have ever driven, Its a much better daily driver than the Wrx.

my good friend has a WRX STI and it amazes me more and more every time i ride in it. it handles like a dream and its damn fast. ive never rode in or drove an A4 but im willing to bet the WRX is better..every review ive ever read has been raving about the subaru.

Get the WRX! Stay away from German cars! Parts are hard to find and way expensive for the German cars ! The WRX will out last the Audi !

neither..... get an EVO MR.... with the six speed, central differential , awd, and roughly 278 hp, it's crazy... a buddy has one on order and we got to drive one at a dealership near me and it is a huge jump from the 03-04 EVO.... it is a virtually new suspension with bilsteen dampers... i have driven both the sti and the evo, and i believe the evo is much more practical for the money.

I second this!

The WRX is a fast car, but thats it.

The Audi is fast, has potential to be very fast, but is also a very refined car compared to the WRX. Just sit in both and ask yourself, which car would I rather drive (before you even turn the key)

I'm a huge VW/AUDI fan and I know I'd take the A4 anyday...

a wrx is like sitting in a school chair and the a4 is like sittin in a lazy boy plus i really dont think any of you that are saying sti have ever driven 1 all u know its its got nice rims and turbo and its fast ride in 1 and say to you self would u wanna ride in this every day my buddy has 1 and he hates and he had a gti with bilstein and h&r race coils thats a hard ride the sti s worse for any buddy that knows any thing about suspension in car know that other combo is almost pain ful get the audi leave it a lone drive it you should be able to get 180-250+ thousand miles on it from what i have heard thats alotmore than the suburu

keep in mind a turbo rebuild around 100+k and the timing belt around 70k or so...other than that, they are a rock solid engine (1.8 turbo)

I personally love the A4s , I have driven every Audi right up to the A8 and the TT. They are amazing cars.
Theres nothing wrong with the Subaru but its just not a practical car especially as an every day driver .. and the insurance companys will rape you.

What about the 2.8 non-turbo A4's? As fast as the 1.8 Turbos? Also, I heard that pre 1998 Audi's are slower than the 98+ models. I think someone said it had something to do with a valva change.

I like the 1.8T much more then the 2.8, the 1.8 has a bit of turbo lag like I said before but its nothing compared to the WRX's lag.
I haven't spent as much time in the 2.8 as I have the 1.8 but from what I can tell the 1.8 appears to be a little quicker.
All the newer Audis use 5valve heads, where as I'm not sure what the pre-98 models came with but that is most likely why they aren't as quick.

i have a 97.5 vw gti with the vr6 a friend of mine has the the new vr6 wich eats 1.8t's all day and its stock i beleave that this motor is also avaliable in the audi it has more hp at 210 and better gas mileage. plus turbo stinks in the winter u can barly touch the throttle as soon as that turbo gets boost you loose all traction another reason for the 24v vr6 more horsepower and a better driver year round i think it is also a like it cuz turbo is way over rated imo just 1 more better thing to look at with an audi that is better then the wrx

Wow, I dont mean to be a d!ck to a fellow VW'er, but your way off. Your friends "stock" VR6 (24v) will not eat a new 1.8t (maybe the older 150hp), but not the newer 180hp. Trust me, I know for a fact. Besides, if all you want is pure speed, as you suggest, go spend around $400 on a good chip for the 1.8T and that VR6 will be sniffing turbo fumes ALL DAY LONG. You would have to shell out alot more than just $400 on a VR6 to match the performance of a chip'd 1.8T.

As for driving in the winter and dealing with turbo lag of the 1.8T vs a VR6, anyone that knows how to drive and is familiar with both engines and their power curves will have NO problems at all.

Personally, I really like both motors alot. I used to have a 99.5 GTI VR6 and I loved it. This time around, we went with the 1.8T after test driving both. The 1.8T is just a fun motor to drive. Both are great motors and have very different characteristics.

I guess my point is, they are both GREAT VW motors...dont turn it into the common 1.8T vs VR6 trash threads.

OH BTW, the VR6 is NOT in the Audi's...that is a completely different 2.8 "V"6, not the narrow angle (15 degree) VR6.
