What would be better for this: Track,Trails,Hill climbing, dunes and gravel pits, the 250R or the 400ex?

An R is the only way to go, they tear up the dunes, hills, tracks, trails, and grvel pits. I have rode them all and have more fun and more sucess then a 400 ex hands down. You cannot beat a power band when it comes to riding. You can set up an R for all of those different situations. Another thing is that with the new 450r's there are alot of really nice 250r's for an awsome price.

I bought a 400EX new last year and I have a mint condition ATC250R now. I'd I'd take the 250R hands down. http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/images/smilies/trikesown.gif

This is really one of those "it depends" situations.

With quicker revs and faster acceleration, the 250r is much more suited to an aggressive rider, but it also REQUIRES a more aggressive rider. You've got to be spot-on with your shifting, and pay careful attention to the powerband. Many people have lost trophies and prizes due to a missed shift. A 4-stroke can often recover from a missed shift, a two stroke cannot.

With the two-stroke powerband, the 250r is much more "fun" to ride, but it's also more tiring. This can be a big factor in racing, and even all-around enjoyment.

So, look at yourself and your riding habits. What do you like about riding? What's more important, the destination or the journey? If the answer is "destination" then you're probably more suited for the 400EX. Riding is more about getting out and seeing things, rather than pushing yourself and your quad to the limits.

If you could buy a new car, would you get a stick or automatic? If you said automatic, you're more suited to a 400EX, it's easier and requires less attention. Your attention is focused outside, and you should get a quad that doesn't require as close attention to powerband and shifting, and lets you focus on your surroundings rather than your engine.

I race a 250r for Xc and i also race a 400ex too, i will take the 250r anyday, as for the mud give me the 400Ex. The lowend power pulls right through it.

I don't ride wide fawking open everywhere and do some slow trail riding sometimes, and I like the easy maintenance on a 4-stroke, thats why I bought a 4-stroke quad, 2-strokes are just too peaky, noisy, and require too much maintenance for my generally casual trail riding, I do like to get on it sometimes and the 400ex still has the power for that, compared to what I came from (1985 XR200R).

So, my vote goes to the 400ex just because thats what I like, i'm not a big fan of 2-strokes unless your racing, otherwise their too much trouble if you ask me, but they are faster.

I have a 250r an d agree that its a lot of maintenance but when its running its really fast but for what you want to do i guess that a 400ex will do just fine compared to what you had before

I have a stock 86 trx250R and a stock 400ex. And to be honest the R is only slightly faster top end wise. Although a modified R can be made to beat just about anything no doubt. I enjoy riding the R more often though, I grew up on 2 strokes. I think stock for stock the 400EX is probably better for what you want. It's more comfortable on the trails has decent power and good hook up, it's tough as hell too.
But if you are going to sink any kind of coin into one, the R would be much more rewarding.

a 250r cannot be compared to a 400ex.a 250r is much faster

You have no clue what you are talking about when you make a comment like that. when you make a comment like that it seems like you have not ridden both and rode with people on both quads. I raced a slighty moded 400ex when my 250r was stock and was beat. read the other posts on this site and you will see that you have no clue what you have said. I am a proud owner of a 250r and it is a legendary quad. a 400ex is also a very good quad. now that i have put money into my 250r i can beat and run with any quad out there. make that post on the 400ex forum and see what kind of feed back you get. if you would have read the post right before yours you would have seen that your comment has no truth to it. everything is a matter of opinion and circumstance. do not just make a simple one line post with no facts to back it up. it does no one any good on the forums. it is just another persons opinion.

If you cannot beat a 400ex with youre 250r its maybe because you cant drive .My 250r is stock and i have no problem what so ever to beat a 400ex. So before you start making fun of me you should maybe learn how to drive or maybe youre 250r is not working real well.

first of all you do not drive a 4 wheeler you ride it. second, i have been riding all my life. If you read my post it it was a bone stock 250r vs a slightly moded 400ex. Like bender said on this post that he has both a stock 400ex stock 250r. I am not trying to "make fun" of you i am just saying, when you make a post give some reasons for why not just a one line statement that has no facts behind it. no one will believe some one who just makes a statement with no facts, you have to have experience with it to back it up. make that same post on the 400ex forum on this site and see what is said.

ok i see what you mean but i dont understand how you guys can say that a 400ex is as fast as a 250r cause its about a year and a half that i have my r and the only stock quad that beats me is the quadzilla.Ive raced a 450r and a yfz 450 and im slightly faster than they are.Ive also driven a 400ex and i dont think its very impressive.

alot of it is how it is set up, tires, gearing, mods..... i am not saying a 250r can't do it but like others have said on this post it is very close...

gagne736

ya that might be true too but all i know im in front of a 400ex front the start to the end. Thats why i thaught it was weird that people in this forum said that a 400ex is as fast as a 250r.Anyways......

What terrain are you riding on?

I've done the stock 250r vs stock 400EX comparison MANY times, since I own both. On an asphalt drag race, the 250r will get off the line slightly faster and pull 1-2 quad lengths, but then both are equal up to the top of 5th gear (but the 250r has the 6th gear, and will slowly pull away) In the middle, neither quad can gain on the other.

In sand, however, it's a completely different story. The 250r will run circles around the 400EX, and puts up a decent fight against the newer machines. The 400EX can't even come close to competing with the newer machines in the sand.

Also, what type of comparisons are you making? Horsepower and speed comparisons are NOT valid on an MX track, or tight trails.

i agree that in gravel that a 250r does not have that much of an advance but on asphalte forget about it the r is a mile away
