Ok here's the problem, If I can only do one what should I do; get a 426 kit on my 400EX or have the rear shock rebuilt. I have ELKA front shcoks but stock rear shock. With money being an issue, should I go for the local rebuild @ approx $480 or get the rear shcok done for $275 plus shipping. All answers are expected to be personal preference, so please just let me know what you think.
Thanks

Its always best to do the suspension first. Stock shocks can't hardly handle the power from a stock motor much less a built one.

So the rebuilt shock will be a better purchase than more power at this point?

so your saying if you bought new front shocks form a company and had them just rebulid your rear. your $300 rear rebuild will match your $900 front shocks with rezys

It depends on what you mean by "match". If you buy front shocks with SSD then you will need to have your rear shock rebuilt to SSD to match the fronts.
If your asking is a rebuilt stock rear shock as good as an aftermarket rear shock then your answer is no.

ok so ill prolly get ssd on the fronts when i get them. so how much would a rebuild to match the ssd fronts cost (just an estimate)? i undrstand that it would not be as good as a brand new rear but the performance would be pretty close right?

The rear shock on the 400ex when converted to ssd and revalved is alot better than stock. It is a really good way to go if you are on a budget. I would say I do rear conversions for at least half of the elkas we sell the other half buy the rear elka

SSD = Self sagging device means the same thing as zero preload (lowered ride height)

Thanks, Standard shipping should be fine then. Thanks for all your help. Front shocks or an fcr carb will be next.
