400ex engine noise

hey guys i have a 400ex and it is making a metal on metal clinging noise. i thought it was the valves so i took the head off and the valves looked fine and i change the oil and put a new oil filter in and started her up and it' still making the noise and it is smoking real bad. it doesn't seem like it is running any worse than before though. do you guys have any idea?

is it white smoke?
a compression check would tell you a lot as to what it is.
its probably time for a bore job and a new piston and rings.
