The 12 Hours of ATV America is now in its third year, and the race is centrally located in the state of Iowa, which puts it almost in the middle of the country for racers traveling from either the east coast or the west coast.

The terrain in the central part of the country east of the Rocky Mountains is primarily flat land with fields of corn as far as you can see.

As we headed to the track Friday Evening, the temps were in the 80’s and conditions were awesome for racing, but a storm was brewing to the west and heading east.

Finally we arrived in Fort Doge, IA, the home of the 12 Hours of America race.

The location of the track was on the west side of the river last year, but the location was moved to the east side of the river this year to a temporary site for this year.

Next year, the track will be moved once again to new location just a mile north of this year’s temporary location.

As we arrived at the track around 6PM, the storms from the west came roaring through with wind gust upwards of 50 MPH with heavy rain. Luckily the storm was a quick mover, but it still easily dropped nearly an 1" of rain on the track.

When the storm passed the temps quickly dropped into the 50's and winds remained steady in the 20 MPH range as a rainbow formed to the east.

Many teams decided to make some last minutes changes to their ATV setups to deal with the muddy conditions they were going to encountered in atleast the first lap of Saturday's race.

Team #31 (On the Gas with Team GasGas & Wachs Racing)grabbed their hacksaw and decided to cut the end of their handlebars off to save weight, lol. No, actually, they needed to cut off the throttle spacer to allow room to install their Powermadd hand quards for added mud protection.

#408 Emu Racing(Jerome Rewerts, James McNaul, and Ryan Jiminez) worked on their machine into the dark as many teams.

Admin

All the machine's were inspected and the frames were marked to prevent changing during the race. Also, transponders were added for electronic scoring.

Saturday Morning, the racers woke up to be created with temps in the 30's and some scattered showers. The race was delayed one hour for some final track preparations, which gave some riders the extra time they needed to prepare.

After the starting area was disced, Teams quickly began packing down a path for their lead rider to run across for the start of the race.

The starting positions besides the Pro Teams were randomly selected by the Ref, Tom Prendergast, and the start locations were staked off with Team numbers.

#72 Media Allstars(Jimmy Osborn) is off to a fast start on their YFZ. The Media Allstars team consisted of Jorge Cuartas, Todd Macke, and Jimmy Osborn. All three have disabilities, but they don't let it slow them down from doing what they love to do and that is ride ATVs.

It was truly inspirational to watch Jimmy with only one arm start the race, which proves that you can do anything if you put your heart into it.

half way through the 1st lap, #4 Bill Ballance & #1 Chris Borich had already pulled away from the rest of the riders by several seconds.

Next to emerge through the trees was #29 Bryan Cook and #500 Greg Trew

#310 Nac's Racing (Bryan Baker, Rhett Butler, and Mike Carter)was back to 15th place aboard one of the very few 400EX quads entered into the race. I was interested to see how well the 400EX was going to stack up against all the new race quads available today.

It was still early, so time would tell.

It didn't take but one lap for the first team to head into the pits to give the machine a look over, but the rider spent less than a minute in the pits and headed back out.

Admin
11-02-2004, 05:16 PM
After a few laps, Chris Borich pulled into the Pits and Matt Smiley took over with the lead.

#29 Derisi Racing /Houser Racing (Bryan Cook) was running strong in 4th place heading into the 4th lap when their YFZ stalled and left him sitting in the woods for two laps until anyone came to tow him back into the pits :(

Unfortunately, Cannondaleriders.com(Doug Flinner) suffered the same fate when they broke down near the same spot and also had to wait two laps to be hauled back to the pits. The engine suffered damage and they retired from the race after only 4 laps and leading the 30+ Class.

Shortly aftewards, Gallagher caught word that Brandon was broke down and notified Bill, so they could run and try to help get him going again.

The skid plate ended up coming off and derailing the chain. Also, the rear rotor was bent. Brandon was able to get the back on and take off to try to finish the lap.

Admin
11-03-2004, 08:55 AM
Brandon kept the hammer down as he headed toward the pits with his goggles already off. The #4 Maxxis team dropped back to 5th place after they were required to bend back the rotor as straight as possible and try to salvage some rear brakes and prevent any more damage to the Caliper.

With the first 6 hour session almost complete, many teams began installing their headlights before the the start of the 2nd session.

#88 JB Racing's Jeremy Rice were in able to quickly move up from 4th place when #44 JPMX suzuki engine failed, which took them out of the race after working their way up to third place behind #6 Lost Creek Cycle.

JB Racing picked up another spot when they passed #6 Lost Creek Cycle and moved into 2nd place behind #1 East Coast ATV

With East Coast ATV out in the lead for the last lap of the 1st Session, the #4 Maxxis tires team pulled into the pits for a calculated pit stop to finish repairing the YFZ from earlier damage in the race, and they began preping it for 2nd session.

They knew that they had around 5 minutes to leave the pits before Matt Smiiley would take the checkered flag and the 20 minute countdown would begin for any riders still out on the track to complete the lap.

Admin
11-03-2004, 09:53 AM
Laz and Jimmy didn't waste any time making the neccassary fixes and adjustments. The brakes pads were destroyed and the caliper piston seals were leaking on the machine from the bent rotor damage. New pads were installed along with a chain was adjusted and a chain guide was added to keep the chain from derailing in the 2nd session.

The Maxxis team was able to make the adjustments with time to spare as they headed out to complete the last lap and remain on the lead lap.

Teams #28 Walsh Race Craft/Quad Briel(Michael Walsh, Denny Seifner, and Josh Creamer) and #101 Mikes Cycle World Honda/ Duncan Racing Internation(Brad Page, Andris Lagzdins, and Justin Short) crossed the finish line right behind Matt Smiley, but they were both atleast one lap behind.

Andy Lagzdins tried to hold off the hard charging Matt Smiley before the finish line to get in one more lap and stay on the lead lap, but Matt's smooth riding allowed him to make the pass before the finish and put Mikes Cycle World one lap down, but they still were in great shape in 4th place and could move up if #4 Team Maxxis or #88 JB Racing didn't finish their last laps before the time expired.

Utility Class

The most intense battle of the day for the lead beside the Maxxis Team and East Coast ATV had to be between top four teams in the Utility Class.

The 2nd and 3rd place teams (Penland Bros Racing, and Bad Monkey Racing) staying right with each other while team #515 FD Racing(Alex Gronbach, Jason Mickelson, and Jarrod Sheets) was holding a commanding lead early in the race.

As the race continued, the gap narrowed and the Penland Brothers gain to threaten before the end othe 1st season.

Team #99 ATV Scene.com(Tom Farr, Jim Stack, and John Maley) ran into problems early in the race with a broke axle and were out of it after only 12 laps. Also, it was rumored that one of the riders was injuried in an accident, but I haven't been able to confirm this information. Hopefully, no one was seriously injuried if this proves to be true.

2nd Session

With all the riders off the track from the 1st session, A line of almost 90 quads was formed to prepare for staging of the 2nd session. Amazingly, many teams remained in the race afte the 1st long 6 hours, but night fall was coming and the course was becoming extremely rough.

The ATVs were staged in the order they finished the last lap of Stage one, and the lap times were erased and only the total number of laps completed was important for beginning of stage #2. A team could have been almost 14 minutes behind a team in front of them, and now they will be on the same lap and starting over again, which played into the strategy of many teams pitting before the end of the last lap.

Admin
11-03-2004, 05:57 PM
With an hour break between the two stages, many riders relaxed and grabbed a bite to eat. Yann, Elka Suspension, took advantage of the free time to check with his riders to see how the suspension was working on their machines and offer adjustment advise for the 2nd session as the track became whooped.

Admin
11-03-2004, 05:58 PM
The hour quickly passed, and the riders once again lined their machines up agains the snow fence on an angle, and they were given two minutes to warm their ATVs up before the start of the 2nd Session.

Several laps later, Pat Brown had passed both #1 East Coast ATV and #28 Walsh Race Craft to take over the lead in the 2nd Session, but he remained a few laps down in the Overall.

During his sprint to the front, Pat Brown put in the fastest lap time of the day with a 12:26 lap time, which was just over six seconds faster than Chris Borich's 12:32 recorded also in the 2nd session.

Great job on the race coverage, Harlen. I still don't know how you manage to race an event and cover it too.
This was my first 12hrs of America race, and I was fortunate to get hooked up with Brad Page and Justin Short. Everything just fell into place and our quad was flawless. We really just winged it as far as planning a strategy for the race; it seemed like the schedule and rules changed alot anyway! We just rode hard and had a good time and it worked out in the end.
The course in Iowa was pretty much a GNCC track with a few extra jumps, and the results seem to reflect that. In comparison to the Pont de Vaux 12hr, the track in France is a cross between a TT and an MX. They only had 6 jumps total on the course, and zero trees. The lap times were 3 minutes for a 2 1/2 mile loop. Each event has its own aura of coolness, and I hope to return to both races next year.
Thanks goes out to Duncan Racing, DirtFirst, RollDesign, ITP, Douglas, GPR, IMS, Fox, and Brad Page.
Please say a prayer for my good buddy Paul Rowlands, who is recovering from a bad crash he had a few weeks ago in the UK.

Thanks for posting some pics of me. Some people asked if I raced or took photos??? If they only knew that I put in easily 10+ laps before we broke.

hey guys,

It was an awsome race! although I think it was 2 six hour races in one. The rules really stink! We had like a 5 minute lead in the first half just to have it cut to like 20 seconds on the restart!! they need to come up with a different plan.

As for the racin action, it was intense! the track was fun and rough. Chris started the race, I went second, and Matt went third. The last 9 laps were the best . Matt went out and we were tryin to figure out how many laps we would each end up runnin and who would finish. we were re fueling every rider change but had missed one earlier and found out we could go at least 7 laps without stopping. All of us were pretty much dead tired from how rough the track was and how fast we were going. Well Matt decided to take alot of punishment and stay out for 5 laps!! So we had it figured out that chris was going to do 2 more fast laps and switch to me for the last three, this way someone fresh was on the whole time. Turns out we were a little too fast and when I came around for what we thought was the white flag lap it ended up being 2 more. I was pretty beat so I held up one finger as I went by my pits(no not that finger) to let them know someone should be ready for one final lap. As I pulled in I think we had about a minute lead and no brakes. Chris was ready to go for one last lap. This is where the fuel stop we missed earlier helped us to know we didnt have to wast time refueling cause we could make it on gas. Chris just went out and cruised to a great victory. I would like to thank Chris, Matt, and Joe borich for giving me the chance to ride with them. I also have to thank Douglas wheel for standing by me in this whole thing. Also, East coast,Maxxis, shift, blingstar, hinson, axis, and my girlfriend for standing around for 12 hours, and everyone else in the pits that helped us out. Look for me to come out big next year and win a championship!! Thanks for all the support everyone.

good run man that's awsome,
i agree with you 200% on loosing your lead for the start of the second session thats sux

yep the loss of your lead stinks if your the 1 leading we had a 11minute lead and was sure Chris would catch them and pass them in that time so we could go a lap up but he had to pit and that let them get in time>

The rules are cool if your not the 1 winning the race at that time>

All in all I like how its run having the starting lineup as you come thru the checkers>>

Good luck in your quest for a championship John!!

Harlen I'm greatfull that you always give us some action :) but sometimes you have no idea what is really going on:( yes I did hurt my hand but I also finished the race actually I was the one that got the checkered flag! So out of respect can you please make sure that what you are posting for everyone to read is correct. Angel

The Alba Action Girls were down to two riders(Angela Moore and Traci Cecco) after Angel Atwell injuried her wrist to the point that it began to swell up, and the team didn't want her to risk injuring it any further. Get Well Soon Angel

I received this information from one of your team members, and trust me, I will make 100% sure that if I don't know all the facts to the any of your racing details in the future that I won't post or submit any photos or stories to any of the magazines, so I would avoid offending you :)

I now assume that you put in as many laps as both Traci & Angela did with your injury in the 2nd Section? I am only as knowledgable as the information that is told to me prior to the race report.

AWESOME coverage again guys!!! i love coming here and reading this every night, it's great. i can't wait till next season too!

hey John, this is Anthony Mastrocola. i just wanted to say a few things...first off, CONGRATULATIONS! i remember watching you at High Point holding off Gust with a busted header and now you go out there and win this thing! cutting four and a half minutes off is not cool at all, they definilty should have worked something out there, and then no brakes? wow, awesome job! i'm glad that Honda worked out for you . well, great job! i can't wait to watch you next year.

oh and by the way, i'm REALLY looking forward to coming up, i can't wait!

Hey Anthony,

thanks for all the props. But I cant take all the credit. I had a great team that really worked well together. Matt Smiley, and Chris Borich are two of the best out there. I got lucky to ride with them. Joe borich also set up the bike perfect. I cant wait to get you up here to do some training and see what I can teach you.

I also would like to say get well soon to Chris Borich who fractured his collar bone this weekend at rausch creek.

Later everyone...

John:

I certainly understand your frustration about loosing your lead going into the second session(although it allowed us a new race after our 10 minute first session set-back), but I think that is part of what makes this race so unique. There is a strategic game of cat and mouse that occurs during the first 6 hour session and in the case of this years event it wound up with only 3 teams being on the lead lap to start the second session. If the race continues to be run in 2 six hour sessions, than I beleive that the current time keeping/scoring system is the best way to go(and I will stand by that even if we are on the loosing end of the deal next year), by only counting the laps in the first session.......but if you want it to be a true 12 hour every second counts race, then I feel that the best way to accomplish this would be to run 12 hours non stop with no break or intermission.:D

O yeah and congratulations again, you guys rode a great race....maybe next year we can make the finish even closer:eek: hopefully with us coming out on top this time:macho
