I just bought a sandblaster and blasted the engine on my 400ex and it looks pretty good now. No more brown gunk baked onto the motor. But now I am thinking about taking it out of the frame and painting it, but I dont want to go through all the trouble of doing so if it wont last. Has anyone ever done this?

Yeah, I found that thread, but there wasnt a long term conclusion on whether is lasted or not.

Didn't work out too good for my 125 after constant boot rubbing.... it looked good for a week or so though

Most of the motor i am getting put together is coated with some heat dissipating stuff.

It really dont matter what you put on the side case its gonna rub off eventually.

We did it around the first of September....We used Hi-temp silver paint and it really looked good....Look Here (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=124936) It has held up pretty good....We have pressure washed it a number of times and it has really gotten muddy....Here are some pictures of it today....I know it won't hold up forevever, but it still looks pretty good....http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid145/pc015689275ab371533e46efb1989af90/f67094d0.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid145/p8e410ad96590498c7ca4abaa6d9b3f4e/f66edb1e.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid145/peecac8c7d5b65c19fc737c4b75a0bd4f/f670a637.jpg

Duponster,

That still looks good man! Glad to see it held up through a few washings and mudbaths so far. Keep us informed if you will at how well it holds up even further down the road.

Great looking quad BTW. :)

The heat should not be a problem. I don’t know about the mud and boot marks.
I have used engine paint on lots of V-8’S and it all ways holds up.
All so I started using regular auto paint on my v-8 motors and it looks real sharp the water runs like 180-210 and the paint is fine.

if it starts to rub off just tuch it up!!

Don’t know who hot a quad will get!!

A water cooled motor should be fine, but i would be leary of doing it on an air cooled motor.

I'd say, for the side cases, take them to your local parts powdercoater. I had the side cases on my 300 done with a double coat, and they're holding up really well, no scratches at all yet. and it only cost me like 50 dollars. As for the rest of the motor, I'd say go with the high temp paint, don't think it'll wear off too quick.

i thought about this before while i had the engine ou tof my 400 but never did it i was thinking more of having the side cases polished and paint the rest of the motor black or silver. That would look good polished cases and a black motor

one of my friends painted his LRD head pipe with that black heat paint and by the end of the 1st practice it had all burnt off and was like dripping off the pipe. but good luck either way

Thats weird I've had all of my pipes painted on my sleds and I jsut did my ex pipe with the high temp paint. Still holding up really good. You have to be careful though because every coat of high temp paint holds more heat in the engine. I'm kind of skeptical on doing it to an air cooled EX. I did my headpipe but stopped at that.

Sorry I couldn't get back sooner. The paint is still holding up really good. And we used just the normal silver heat paint in a spray can where you can get at any auto parts store. It still looks great.

i did it and the black will lose some gloss but if you use 500 degrae paint it may burn by the header but the 1200 even works on mufflers and end of header

thats prolly why. Your not really supposed to use gloss paint for heat paint. I just used the plain old rustoleum spray paint. I think that is 1200. Works great. Good for making snowmobile pipes look new again.
