^^a friends neighbor that i went snowmobilin with before beats the crap outta his xc600 and not too many problems. just chaincase broke twice, windshield would always pop out, and went through clutch belts real fast. although it did engage at like 4800 rpm.:p thats all that i can think of that kept goin wrong.

How many miles is on it? Most big block polaris twins (700 and 800's) Need to have the crank trued up after 3000 miles. Other then that they are pretty bullet proof. My bro has an xc with a hot seat y pipe, single pipe, can, milled head, spacer plate, v-force reeds, and the ingnition upgrade. The plate and milled head changes the port timing, the ignition is a huge increase. All of these things can be done to that 700 also. If done together its about a 20hp gain. The clutching was pretty good right from the factory. You don't want a high engagement on the 700 or 800 either. They peak at 7750, to 7900 also.

We have broke 2 drive shafts on the xcr with a mystery motor (its a secret) but make sure the clutches are in alingment. And how many studds is he running? You don't need more then 144 on that 600. The xcr engages at 5600 and peaks at 9300. Neglect is always going to be a factor in a chaincase break. You should tear it apart and check it every season.

If you get that 700, either run spectro(synthetic) or polarises ves oil only! You have to clean the power valves once or twice a season too. If you junk a set get the stainless steel ones from polaris. They are the only ones that will really last.
