You can get a good 22 for around $150. Some are cheaper or more expensive but it just depends on your needs. I have a ruger 10/22 blued barrel with a 9X32 scope and it shoots great and never rusts. The stainless will last a lot longer than a regular barrel, but if you clean them frequently you should have no problems. If you hunt in the rain much I would consider stainless. I always liked the Remington you are talking about.

I took have a ruger 10/22 with the blued barrel, and composite stock. I put a scope on it but can't remember what it is, and since im not home i cant look ! The only complaint i have is that ive shot it so much the spring in the clip to keep the bullets at the top is messing up and sometimes have to hit the clip to get the bullet it, but nothing a new clip wont fix!

I own a Remington 597 and Im in Fl too. The stainless has a nice look to it and the no rust is a plus here since its so dang humid all the time. I won mine at a NRA Raffle though so I cant help ya on prices. Good gun, ain't ever gave me problems.

I have a stock ruger 10/22 and I really like it...

Stick with the Rugers or Remingtons.. can't go too wrong either way

paid $150 for my 10/22 from wal-mart, it has the 18" blued barrel and i added a scope. best gun ive shot and one of the two clips i have is screwed up from shooting it so much. shot around 3000 shells threw it this year.

if you can swing it, the ruger 10/22 is an awesome firearm along with the marlin 22.

be safe

The ruger is a good firearm as is the remington, although on the remington buy a current model with the steel clip as the older plastic ones are crap. My 597 in 17hmr has had some issues, although remington has sorted them out and it SEEMS fine.
If you could cough up around $230 and could find a cz trainer(bolt action, 24" barrel). These are incredibly accurrate and people are scooping them up. You could have bought one for about $180 a year ago. Cz also made a real limited run with a 28" barrel, these brought about the same $180 last year, now I've seen a few new ones in the $500 range. Good luck,
