I'll know for sure tonite, but I think I've got a blown head gasket. I used a noname one when I assembled the engine, and I don't think it held up to 12:1. What head gasket is good for the high compression? 250x, .50 12:1 wiseco.... I don't want to do it again..

i use the cometic flex steel head gasket on my 440 with 11:1.
havent had any problems with it.
you need a flex steel type head gasket with that much compresson.

OK.. now I am really confused...

I called Cometic to get a part # for the flex steel head gasket. C&D said they didn't have a listing for it. Cometic asked me what the bore was, so I told them-- 74.5mm... They said the biggest they make is for a 73mm... How can that be, if you guys are putting it on a 400+ engine? the 400&440 have 85 & 89mm bore... I asked them for any other suggestions, but they didn't have any. How could I have mixed this up?

I am sorry-- I misread. my recommendation is only for 400 and 440 head gaskets.

if you are blowing head gaskets, you might want to have a look at the studs. My buddy blew 4 head gaskets befor we figured that one out. he ended up having to put helicoiles in, that fixed it. we figured that when the motor heated up, the studs streached a litlle and let the gasket blow. we have an a class racer, that says to only use honda gaskets. Take it for whats its worth, but he has been racing EX's since the early 90's. but if your gasket just blew, I would check your studs.

I haven't torn it down yet to know for sure exactly what has happened, and I have confused myself even more last night. I did a leak down test on the cylinder with 120psi of air, loosened the rocker arms, and no air leaked by the valves. I did have a tiny bit by the piston/rings, as I was able to hear some air in the crankcase. I figured either way, I need a new headgasket and wanted to replace with a good one.

Your head or cylinder may also be warped , so be sure and check that while it is apart.
