View Full Version : 2004 GNCC Round #14 "Ironman"

The most anticipated event of the year is the "Ironman" in Crawfordsville, IN. This event attracts more riders and spectators than any other GNCC event. The name “Ironman” came from legendary GNCC two time ATV Champion Bob Sloan.

The track is located just one hour west of Indianapolis, IN. The area is extremely flat and the landscape is filled with fields of corn and other harvest crops, but don't let the flat land fool you because the "Ironman" track is anything but flat as I will describe later.

With the forcasted rain heading toward the track on Saturday for the race, I arrived early to get parked in the grass field by the pit area to avoid having to park in the crop fields because they turn to mud pits when it rains.

With EXriders.com members and sponsors giving away a Kasea to the winner of the 90cc Limited Class, Pappy also arrived early to prepare for the big event. Also, he wanted to make sure that no one broke into his trailer, so he decided to leave the keys tio the locks at home:eek:

Luckily, I had an extension cord and Bare Performance's, Ty Rogers, offered us his grinder:D

Once the locks were cut from the trailer, Cody got out his Honda 90 and showed some of his modifications to Brenon while Ryan watched.

It was a great sight to see a youth ATV at a GNCC and know it was going to be raced the next day:)

The Bare Performance guys, Matt Bare and Ty Rogers, set out some of their products before we headed out to check out the track.

The 10 of us headed out to the starting area and started walking the corn field high speed sections of the track.

Admin

The track had several field sections, but the majority of the track was in the woods. The "Ironman" has been around for sometime, so the track was extra wide and rough in sections from years of abuse. With the leaves already falling it was going to be an extremely slick first lap for the morning race.

The course also crossed the stream several times with several steep down hills that were hill climbs last year because the track was virtually identical, but run in the opposite direction.

The weather and track conditions were perfect on Friday, but the forcasted rain was going to definitely change things before the races on Saturday.

While walking the course, Ray & Chris Martinez were meeting with riders explaining their new product the Shok-SpotR, which is attached to the back of the helmet to allows racers to know when their helmet has received a serious impact and needs to be replaced. This is a great idea because wearing a internally damaged helmet may be just as unsafe as wearing no helmet at all.

Mini Quad Expert, Brandon's Father,Laz Sommers of GT Thunder installed a new piston in Cody Hill's Honda before the race.

As I walked around the pits, I began seeing youth riders everywhere, which brought a smile to my face :)

The great thing was that not all the riders were young boy, but instead I saw several girls anxious to give GNCC racing a try. One of which was Ashley Eckert, who is none other than Marty Eckert's Daughter.

On Vendor Row, the Cardio Stack Guys and Gals were informing riders about their pre race supplement that seems to be working for several riders that have tried it.

Wade Summers and the Tireballs crew were extremely busy all day Friday and Saturday changing tires for many riders that wanted to switch to a more aggressive mud tire. I swapped out my ITP XC tires for the HD rear tires because I think they are just incredible in the mud.

Chris Borich and Dawn walked around talking with other riders to pass some time on Friday.

HMF's, Hans Luenger, rode his YFZ to registeration.

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:12 PM
The registration line was the longest that I have seen all season friday evening, and it remained this long until dark.

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:13 PM
Once you registered, then you moved to the sign up line which was just as long, and by the time that I finished signing up, it was dark and Tech Inspection was already closed.

Friday Night, many riders got into the Halloween spirit and setup decorations in the pits.

The great thing about GNCC racing are the many friendships that are formed at the track, and many riders look forward to getting together every other week to hang out the night before the race.

Some sit back outside and watch a movie they rented before leaving for the track.

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:19 PM
Others, just gather lumber and build a small fire to hang around and talk about what ever comes to mind.

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:20 PM
Some really get into it camping at the track and have a mini party amongst friends.

For some, the evening is also a time to make some last minute preparations before Saturday's Race.

Chris Conklin spent his evening installing a mandatory kill cord on Ryan Early's yamaha, so he would be able to race the next morning.

Before I knew it, Saturday Morning had arrived and it was time to quickly qet inline for Tech Inspection at around 7AM before the sun came up in the East. With the Youth race starting at 8:30AM, I knew the line would become long and steady later in the day.

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:27 PM
Many of the Youth riders were also up early, and were first in line with their parents to go through tech inspection.

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:29 PM
The Tech's primarily insured that kill cord was functional and that the kids were signed up in the right classes and sent on their way. They weren't required to do sound testing, but I did see posted at that the new sound limit next year will be 102db instead of the 104db limit allowed this year. I am sure we will hear more about this at the banquet in November.

Brysoon Neal and his Father, Chris Neal were both up early preparing for both of their morning races.

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:33 PM
Many of the kids began gathering together almost an hour before the race to talk about their upcoming 1st race in a GNCC event.

The weather remained dry first thing in the morning, but Stephanie Parton gave me the word that Rain was moving in shortly and it was going to last for a while:(

Admin
10-25-2004, 08:36 PM
The EXriders.com Kasea 90 was on display at the Podium for all the kids to see, and It was incredible the way the members of EXriders.com and it sponsors got together to offer such an awesome prize to the winner of the 90cc Youth Limited Class.

A big thanks goes out to Pappy(Kenny Hill) for cordinating the giveaway and making this possible.

Start

The 90cc Youth Limited was on the front row with 11 riders out to win the Kasea 90

With all the umbrellas protecting the riders from the rain, it looked more like the Pro Afternoon race than a Youth Race which was pretty impressive considering this was the 1st GNCC Youth race since 1997.

Jeff Russell gave some last minute instructions to the riders before the start of the race.

Michael Keleman took the early lead in the 90cc Youth Limited and showed some great XC talent as he created new lines to pass riders in his path.

Unfortanately, his race ended in the 9th lap with Brandon Boso only a few seconds behind.

90cc Youth Production leader puts the pass on 2nd place Youth Limited Rider, Kyle Riley, as come to the bottom of the ravine.

Walker Fowler looked like a natural out there, and he quickly seperated himself from the rest of the riders as he built couple of minute lead in the overall.

Admin
10-26-2004, 08:24 AM
Kyle Riley did some passes of his own as he works his way past Taylor Chance on the inside line.

Kyle really started closing the 2 minute gap between him and Brandon half way through the race, and in only 4 laps, he moved to within 30 seconds of Brandon, which forced Brandon to turn up the wick and put the hammer down to stay out front to win the Kasea.

Admin
10-26-2004, 08:26 AM
