I ride a wheelie 1st through 5th and I use the clutch. I never under any circumstances shift with out it.

Its easier to do it w/o the clutch, but if you have your balance right, you can clutch. Why not work on both?

You have to pull the front end way up, to where it almost feels like your going to go over backwards, then shift. That way when you the front drops your front end will still be high enough to keep going.

Doesn't shifting with out the clutch tear up your trans gears? I would think so.

Not using the clutch while shifting does shock the tranny pretty good. Make sure you let off of the gas if you're not gonna use the clutch. It's always better to use clutch but I shift every now and then without it. Tranny is tough.:D

I Never use the clutch when i shift i havent on my 300 and never did on my 450 from the day i got it last febuary. i have not had any trouble at all. IMO the clutch is needed for starting out and big hill climbs when your on the throttle and and need to use the clutch.

This might sound gay, But what helped me with my wheelies, I tried to walk my quad for a few hours one evening, just in 1st gear, And when u get that down, U feel really really comfortable where your ballance point is, and U will just know where to bring the quad to before u shift, But u can shift with the clutch, or u can just jump the gears, I have a 99 400ex, with a 100%stock bottom end, ANd mine has held up fine both ways, But i would recomend the clutch!!!!

(walking)- pulling the front tires, and Get it straight up and down, and hit the brakes, and ger the quad to stop on the back tires and start to fall back down, and then take off again!!

I can walk my quad in pretty well as far as i want too!!

I use the clutch all the time, its there for a reason.

That's what I'm saying. I wouldn't even think about shifting with out it. I thought everyone thought that way too. Glad I bought my 450R new, god knows what a used one has been through.
I don't shift my car into reverse while going down the highway, same thing if you ask me.

here is where I think you will notice the difference if you power shift your machine alot. when the bike is new and at idle, stopped you can shift the machine without needing to rock the bike to much. If you power shift a lot, when she gets old it will need to be rocked more and more to, say find neutral or go from 3rd to 1st at a stand still.

my buddy power shifts his machine alot on drag races and when you shift the machine at a standstill you can't feel the gears. On my machine you can feel her shift positively into first, and 2nd etc. etc...

everything will remain tight longer when you use the clutch... i like tight.... hahahha

So if you shift with out the clutch she's gonna get sloppy!

It depends how you do it. If you have the rpms up and let off just as you shift, it will fall right into gear. No clicking or anything. Nice and smooth.
If you aren't in the right range, it won't shift as smooth.
The guy who said it's there for a reason: It's for starting and stopping. Sometimes if I need to go really slow or up a hill, I'll feather it but thats about it.
Done properly, it'll be fine. Hell, you can even shift a car smoothly w/o it if you get the shift points down.

I've shifted cars with out the clutch, you're right it will fall right in if you're in the right RPM range, nice and smooth. I don't think most of the people shifting 4-wheelers with out the clutch are finding this piont, they are slamming it right in.

Breaks are for stoping. if clutches were then there wouldn't be any automatics. One time powershifting won't hurt but it can eventually.

If you can't shift with the clutch doing a wheelie, then I would practice shifting faster. If you practice it then you can do it so fast the bike won't drop much at all. You aren't doing the bike any good by slammin it in gear. splitting those cases isn't a fun project.

i have never used the clutch on a wheelie & ive never had a problem out of it......ive never tried it, but i have a xr650r.....on the Rs i think it's easier to not use the clutch, but like he said, i guess i would rather use the clutch than spend money.....

If you are all looking for a neat trick to do, learn to downshift to a stop while doing a wheelie. That is impressive as hell. Ive seen it done once. This guy was cruising 4th gear on a raptor and stood the front end up and downshifted through each gear and then stopped and held it up for a few seconds and the front dropped.

I cant seem to find the ballance point on my R. witch is strange because I could find it on all my other quads. It will flip over or hit the bar before i can find a ballance point.

can some one show me a pic of this!!!

and yes i know how to ride. ive been riding for 20 years!

Me and my buddies ride wheelies down the high way in 5th gear at the quads top speed for miles. We pull the front up in 5th with no clutch. Our record so far is 5.3 miles. You can still steer around corners by turning the bars, leaning and hanging a leg out on one side for more wind resistance.

you can get the front up in fifth gear...thats pretty impressive

I think it's more impressive riding a wheelie in 5th off the rev limiter

Its easy, just practice. One of my buddies does it on a stock 400EX, pulls the front end right up in 5th gear. Stand up and while you pull up, sit down at the same time and use your momentum with the trottle and once it's up just balance it and go forever.

be careful with those 5th gear wheelies on the pavement. Road rash on your arse hurts like hell. :D
