Can you have a 0 preload rear shock with standard aftermarket or stock fronts and it still work properly?

it will work but not to its full potential you will want to adjust the ride height up on the rear shock so the bike will sit level.

If your bike sags too much in the rear with the ZPS shock you will have a hard time turning because it will want to push in the corners. Especially in the woods on a 400ex! You will need to get the sag within 1/2" lower in the rear if not level to get it to turn correctly.
