Hey this is my first time witha 4stroke. Iwas wondering how often and what kind of oil should i use in my 450r? Do u need to add a fuel stabilizer in the winter time?

No fuel stablizer necessary for winter. Honda recommends changing the oil initally at 20 hours with Honda oil HP4 but Honda makes two different kind HP4 with Molly and HP4 without molly. I would recommend getting without Molly. Hope this helps.

i changed my oil & oil filter on the engine side after the first hour of riding....then changed them again after another 2 hours of riding...then changed them after 6 hours of riding like 3 more times with the honda GN4 10-40...then I switched to mobile 1 red cap and change every 7-8 hours of riding

I've heard that the mobile 1 red cap is one of the best synthetics you can get!

How do you like those Flexx bars?

I haven't put them on my 450r yet but I had a pair on a 2002 Cannondale Speed and they were awesome. It really helps with arm pump and is easier on the wrists. I need a mounting plate for the ignition and temp light to put them on my 450r, I think I might have to have something made since I haven't been able to find anything yet.

BelRay Thumper 20w-50 semi-synthetic, great stuff!

This oil is designed for the new 4stroke motors like the TRX and YFZ. Lot of guys use it. It lasts a long time, even in my race motor. It holds up very well so I'm stuck on the stuff! It is like $5-$6 a quart but its worth it. I use it in both sides of the motor, and i havent missed a shift in a long time....butter smooth shifting!

i change my oil every two weekends of riding. these new 450 4 strokes are hard on the oil so change it often. after break-in you can use the silver bottle honda oil in the engine side only. it does have the moly in it but is ok for the engine. in the tranny i have been using honda gear oil in the tall red bottle. leter this year i plan on switching to Bel-Ray oils.

you probally should stick to oils made for ATV's espcially in the tranny side. Mobil-1 won't go over well in the tranny, but should be ok in the engine side.

Are you freaking serious???

When I go camping in the dunes I ride 10-12 hours a DAY.. I stay there 4-5 days.. Thats 40-60 hours on the motor on only One trip out, if I had to change the oil 3-4 times while im camping in the sand.. Thats just rediculous!! I know their high performance bikes but my my.. That would almost make me want to buy a different 4 stroke so I wouldn't be buying $40 in oil every time I ride like I do with my 250r (R50)..

i only change the engine oil every couple of weekends. i do not change filters and tranny everytime. to me not even a full bottle that cost 5 bucks every other time i ride is definitly worth it. cheap insurance over a thousand dollar rebuild.

Ahaha.. cheap insurance?? Maybe, to me.. oil should be changed after break in. Then after that.. maybe every 3 trips (week in the dunes is 1 trip usually.. or a weekend) should be changing oil, In my R i changed the oil after break-in and i've probably had atleast 80+ hard hours of riding on it, and i mean HARD.. i'm not easy on stuff but i don't try and break any thing. I think i'll change my oil before the next trip (christmas) since I have left over still.

Plus, wouldn't cheap insurance be buying a 4 year warrenty.. ?

80 Hours!?

That's like 3-5000 miles in a car! Even a lawn mower needs an oil change every 20 Hours.

It is recommended to change oil under racing or hard riding conditions, every 5 hours! When you look at the oil especially out of the clutch/gearbox on the 450r you will notice all the fine particles of aluminium in the oil so changing and getting rid of this harmful stuff is most important, for long engine life!:D
It also gives you an early warning in the engine side if you find metal in the oil to a major catastrophe about to happen as some guys have already experienced, and I for one can't afford the non race time a major eengine rebuild will cause ,not to mention the expense????:eek2:
Change that old oil now??? And happy ridin------Like you stole it!

well not quite sure if it's been 80 hours.. but I can estimate its been about, 25+ at winchester, 25 combined at Sand lake, and about 5 hours of break-in in my neighbors field.. so roughly 55 hours on the current oil, No one I know changes their oil every trip out or every 8 hours.. 8 hours is One day of riding for me.
