View Full Version : XR500 motor in a 250X Frame. Who said it can't be done?

Well after many newly invented cuss words and bald spots from scratching my head, I finally did it. My XR500 motor is now in my 250x frame. There are a few bugs that I need to work out (such as compensating for the reverse kick which hits my rear brake assembly and the shifter hits the frame), but it does look pretty nice.

To make it fit:

The kickstarter has to be removed. I had to cut away the top cooling fin (above the exhaust ports) to make room for the front frame rail (right side). Once that far, I noticed that the bottom mount was hitting on the motor. A simple shaving with my grinder and that problem was solved. Now it was nearly in, but I couldn't seem to find anything else that had to be shaved or cut off to make fit. So I did what any redneck would do up here in 'da nortwoods; took advantage of my steeltoe boots and gave the head a swift kick and in it went.

Now for the exhaust, I want to do something a little different. I have seen dual exhaust kits for the 400ex. But I want to add on to that a little more. I want to put a pipe coming out either side towards the back but then cut in towards the back of the motor, come together, then come out together in the center of the grabar. My airbox is gone so I dont have to worry about that. The best way I can describe this is the setup some snowmobiles and crotch rockets have. Two pipes side by side coming out the center. Now running just 'dual straights' would be nice, but it will be loud. So im going to try and find some small mufflers to put in there to come out the back.

I want some feedback on this idea. Anyone else have other ideas? I'm open. I will keep updating and hopefully get some pictures. I do have some of just the motor itself, but I was selling it a while ago in the For Sale section so you can view them there.

What do you think?

Hurry up and get er done, I want some feedback on what kind of performance this beast has. Sounds liek a great Idea. I was thinking about just maybe doing something like that except with like an xr 650 motor, or a 250r motor, or a cr250r motor, or a ktm 520, or who knows what, something faster than a 300ex. Put yours up against a 450, and let me know how it does. I'm probablly just going to buy a 450r probablly, but you never know.
