The track is only a few miles off of I-70 just west of Wheeling, WV. It quickly becomes obvious why it was named "Powerline Park" after taking a ride around the track.

The 11 mile course consisted of various terrains. There were several miles of high speed field sections with some long down hills and up hills. The field became dusty during the race, but visibility wasn’t reduced dramatically unless several racers where battling side by side. The woods were extremely tacky and with several creek beds thrown in along with the mud holes before some steep hill climbs, which made for some bottlenecks during the race.

The pits area were located in a center location on hill top with the track weaving in and out of the woods around them. This year the leaves were already showing their colors after an early frost the past week.

Pete Stadtmueller pulled in Saturday Morning with his trusty Baldwin 250R. Pete races in the Junior Class and could race a 4 stroke machine, but he still prefers his 250R.

Team Kawasaki continues to show its support at the GNCC Series. Currently Team Green is the only company that has a true presence for the ATVs in XC racing, but hopefully, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Honda will follow their lead and have a support trailer for ATVs at next years events.

Take Notice Bryan Baker is selling his vForce  What do you think we will see Bryan on next year???

Santo Derisi made the switch to the 450R as many other pro riders have started doing throughout the season. The kickstart is a turnoff for many, but the lack of electrical problems and DNFed races seem to be winning over many of the Pro Riders, but still no one has switched to the LTZ400??? William Yokley has done extremley well on this machine with the Yoshimura engine kit, but no one else has followed his lead. The only other Z400 on Pro Row is Johnnny Gallagher.

Five Pro Riders (#2 Chris Borich, #15 Andy Lagzdins, #8 Santo Derisi, #9 Todd Knippenberg, #45 Mike Benson) have switched during the season from the YFZ to the TRX450R

#2 Chris Borich made the switch to the Honda for the 2nd Half of the season and hasn't lost a race yet. His last YFZ was forsale at St. Clairsville with a New Honda 450R waiting to replace it in the shadows.

#4 Chad Duvall on the other hand has been extremely successful on his YFZ with nine top 10 overall finishes in a row. Also along the way, he has been on the podium 5 times.

Chad has had a great year despite some beginning of the year grimlins and his serious accident at Rausch Creek that prevented him from racing at the Patriot.

Special Thanks to Am Pro Yamaha, ITP, IMS, Roll Designs, and the many other sponsors that have supported his racing efforts all season.

#2 Chris Borich is back in black with his Black 450R decked out in K&K Racing graphics kit. East Coast ATV has provided great support to Chris this season along with Maxxis, Hiper Technology Wheels, and Sparks Racing.

After winning the last race over Bill Ballance in a battle to the end, Chris is looking to prove it wasn't a fluke.

#1 Bill Ballance & #3 William Yokley look to be strategizing on how to deal with the return to the top for Chris Borich:cool:

Meanwhile, Bill's Brother, Brandon Ballance, is more interesting in hanging out with the ladies:devil:. Maybe this is one of the reasons why Bill is #1 and Brandon is #10:eek:

Brandon Ballance has put on an impressive show this season with five top 10 overall finishes, but he has yet to return to the Podium since last years Hurricane Race. Brandon has worked his way up to 9th Overall for the season, which is a move in the right direction, but he still has a long way to go to catch his older brother Bill, but Brandon still has time on his side.

Congratulations Brandon on your 9th Overall finish at the Mountaineer!

#45 Mike Benson (Four Stroke Tech) heads to the Pro Row:eek: After a slow start to his season with only 2 completed races out of his first 6, he switched to the 450R at the Patriot and hasn't finished below 26th overall running in Open A class. He earned a 5th Overall at the Penton and was 18th overall at the Mountaineer.

His 450R decked out in his new Maier Orange fenders he looked ready for his return to Pro Racing.

Congratulations Mike for your late season success!!!

Meanwhile,#6 Greg Trew started out the season on fire, but hasn't had any luck since Sparta. He is a great person and rider, and hopefully things will start to go his way because he definitely has the speed to finish in the top 10 consistently.

#20 Michael Houston has been tearing up the Mid East Hare Scramble series and has also finished 5 races in the top 10 overall this year in the GNCC Series. Currently, Michael is ranked 10th Overall

Admin
10-12-2004, 06:55 AM
#15 Andy Lagzdins, Dirt First Racing & Duncan Racing, has been extremely consistant this season after switching to the 450R at Steele Creek. Since the switch Andy has finished 9 out of 10 races between 11 and 15 overall. A broken shock linkage at the Wisp dropped him out of his normal position. He has yet to finish in the top 10 overall this season, but has only finished three races worst than 15th overall and they were due to failures.

Andy is currently ranked 13th Overall and has moved up to 10th in the Pro Class!!! More importantly, his good friend and mechanic, Tony, wasn't able to attend this round of the GNCC Series due to back surgery, so my thoughts and prayers go out to Tony for a quick recovery.

10-12-2004, 07:01 AM
#14 Jeff Stoess has been on a down swing since Overall win at Sparta in the Mud. He followed it up with a 5th Overall at Rausch Creek, but hasn't crested the top 20 overall since, so we all know that Jeff is eager for another top finish.

A dust could quickly engulfed the riders behind the leaders, but through the dust, Chris Borich held tight on the inside line to move in front of Bill Ballance for third. #11 Johnny Gallagher was off to a quick start as well running in 5th.

#20 Michael Houston was close behind #6 Greg Trew in 7th with #334 Thomas Barret, #8 Santo Derisi, and #9 Todd Knippenberg all within a few seconds behind Houston. #15 Andy Lagzdins emerged from the woods six seconds later and had worked his way up from 20th to 12th place in the 1st lap.

Over 1.5 minutes later, #4 Chad Duvall headed into his pits because his machine wasn't running right and shut off and wouldn't restart right away. He was able to get it going again, but it costed him a lot of time, and he was back to 19th place after the 1st lap with #45 Mike Benson only a few seconds in front of him with a front flat tire that dropped him out of the top 10 overall.

Admin
10-12-2004, 07:39 AM
Jeff Stoess headed into the pits 12 minutes later with a clogged fuel filter which ended his day after one lap:( Hang in there Jeff!!!

By the end of the 2nd lap, Chris Borich was able to get past Brandon Ballane and pass William Yokley when he went to hot into a corner and bumped into a tree which gave Chris the oppurtunity to take over the lead!!!

Admin

William Yokley was over ten seconds behind Chris in 2nd place

Admin
10-12-2004, 07:49 AM

Just over 30 seconds back, Matt Smiley remained hard on the gas trying to make up some time after having a slow motion over the bars experience, which left him uninjured, but it did cost him some valuable time.

Admin
10-12-2004, 07:53 AM
#6 Greg Trew remained in 7th place, but was within striking distance of #10 Brandon Ballance. Michael Houston was up to 5th place, but he was over 1.5 minutes behind Matt Smiley with three laps to go.

Admin
10-12-2004, 07:58 AM
#9 Todd Knippenberg moved up to 9th place and only 10 seconds behind Bryan Cook who dropped back to 8th place after being passed by Trew & Houston.

The racers were forced to choose one of the 6+ lines through the slop. Picking the wrong line, could leave the leader stuck deep in the mud in sections.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:07 AM
Chris Borich was the first Pro rider to emerge, and he luckily picked one of the better lines through the mud with Bill Ballance only a few seconds behind.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:08 AM
Bill Ballance also made it through the mud with ease and was hard on the gas trying to reel in Chris Borich.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:09 AM
#3 William Yokley was back to third place as he plowed through the trees after the leaders.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:11 AM
#20 Michael Houston remained in 5th place behind Matt Smiley, but he gained seven seconds on Matt, but he was going to have to speed it up to make up the minute difference between the two of them.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:13 AM
#6 Greg Trew passes #10 Brandon Ballance and moves into 6th Place, and things were looking to finally be going in the right direction for Greg.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:14 AM
#10 Brandon Ballance wasn't letting Greg Trew get away from him, and he found the fastest line through the mud and helped close the few second gap between them early in the 3rd lap.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:16 AM
Jared Gruca also found the quicker line on the inside through the mud, but he remained in 14th place behind #4 Chad Duvall who was quickly trying to make up time in his chase toward the front. In two laps, Chad moved up 6 positions, but move to the front was going to get move difficult with each pass.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:21 AM
Mike Benson also managed to work his way up to 16th place.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:23 AM

10-12-2004, 08:34 AM
By the Beginning of the 4th lap, Chris Borich remained in the lead with Bill Ballance right behind him. Bill Ballance stopped for fuel which allowed Chris Borich quickly pickup some time.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:37 AM
Jimmy and Jeremy watches the field section to see how will emerge from the muddy woods section first and what would the distance be between Chris & Bill? Could Chris Borich get stuck in the mud and give up the lead to Bill?

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:39 AM
#2 Chris Borich once again made it through the nasty section without any problems and remained in the lead as he re-entered a tight section of trails that zig zagged through the woods for around a mile before opening up into another high speed field section along the powerlines.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:40 AM
Bill Ballance closed the gap some on Chris, but still remained several seconds behind him.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:42 AM
around 5- 10 seconds later, William Yokley came charging through the woods trying to catch back up to Chris & Bill.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:45 AM
Almost two minutes back, Matt Smiley tried to hold off the hard charging Michael Houston who was gaining ground on him.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:53 AM
Several miles into the 4th lap, Bill Ballance caught up to Chris Borich and took over the lead. Shortly afterwards they encountered a bottleneck which left Bill Ballance & Chris Borich sitting trying to find a way around the stuck riders. Meanwhile, William Yokley caught up with them and found quicker way around and took over the lead once again.

With William Yokley back out front with Bill Ballance and Chris Borich in chase through lapped traffic.

Check out how slick the track looks. It was like ice, and I quickly found this out as I found myself flat on my back trying to move across the track. Luckily, no one was coming or I would have been traction.

Early in the 5th lap, William Yokley remained out front with Bill Ballance almost right along side of him heading through the fields trying to take over the lead.

Admin
10-12-2004, 08:58 AM
Chris Borich was back in third place and only a second behind.

10-12-2004, 09:04 AM
With William Yokley in the lead on his Suzuki, Bill Ballance on his Yamaha and Chris Borich on his Honda race across the field. It was great to seeing the top three manufactures machines battling for the win. It reminded me of the battles between Gust, Jones, and Farr in the GNC Series. Unfortunately, the XC guys haven't received much support from the Manufacturers. I know for a fact that Chris Borich didn't receive any discount on his 450R when he purchased it to race the 2nd half of the season. I hope this changes next season.

Admin
10-12-2004, 09:08 AM
Matt Smiley now was over three minutes back after getting stuck in the mud, which costed him some valuable time which opened the door for Michael Houston, but it was quickly closed when he also ran into problems on the last lap, which allowed the hard charging #9 Todd Knippenberg to move up into 5th place over a two minute behind Matt Smiley.

Admin
10-12-2004, 09:17 AM
Andy Lagzdins moved up to 9th place after Greg Trew once again ran into bad luck and dropped back to 18th place:( after he buried his YFZ in mud and had to wait to be pulled out. Also, his departure from the top ten allowed Byran Cook to move back up to 8th place and Chad Duvall to take over 10th place.

Admin
10-12-2004, 09:23 AM
Within a few miles of the finish, Bill Ballance clips a tree which allows Chris Borich to move back up to 2nd place. Chris then sets his sights on William Yokley. Chris planned where he was going to attemnpt to make his pass and take over the lead on an inside line at end of a field straight away if William Yokley went wide.
Fortunately for Chirs, William Yokley went wide, and Chris was able to squeeze past him to take over the lead.

As I watched within a mile of the finish to see if chris who was still in the lead, I could hear him chatting at me as he went by in first place :D

Admin

William Yokley as gave me a yell as he zoomed past me trying to keep Chris in view, so he could try to recapture the lead before the checkered flag.

Bill Ballance finished an impressive third overall for most riders, but after winning so many overalls, you could tell that he really wanted the win.

It was great to see such an intense battle for the lead with several lead changes occuring to almost the very end, which made this one of the most exciting races for me to cover all season.

If Matt Smiley wouldn't have had his mishaps, it could have been even more interesting with him in the mix.

Pro Am Class

#316 Jathan Seale

Jathan has had an incredible first complete year in the GNCC Series by only finishing out of the top 20 overall one time all season on the Honda 450R. He is one of the few riders that started out the season in Texas aboard the 450R and took the win in the 4 Stroke A Class finishing 12th Overall and switched to Pro Am the Next Race and won his only Pro Am race of the season with an 8th Overall. Since, has consistently been in the hunt, and has consistently finished in the top 5.

More impressively, Jathan Also is tearing up the GNC TT Pro Series as well. He is in the top 5 in the Pro Class and will be heading to Texas this weekend hoping for a win.

#13 Chris Jenks

Chris may carry an unlucky number ,but it hasn't affected his riding ability this season, and it has been enjoyable to watch him and Jeremy Rice battle for the lead at almost every race. Chris also has some impressive stats with two wins and 7 top 10 overall finishes heading into St. Clairsville. His YFZ Yamaha has worked extremely well for him this season.

#669 Adam McGill

Adam started the season at round 4 and finished 4th in Pro Am and 23rd Overall. He has since finished three times in the top 20 overall with his 10th Overall at Milfield being a career best. Adam is a young rider with plenty of talent, so we may get use to hearing his name in the future.

Unfortunately for one 450R rider, as is the case in almost every start, wouldn't start on the 1st kick or even the next, which left alot of passing ahead of him to move to the front before the race end.

Officially, Jatahn Seale finished 1 second behind Chris Jenks, but techinically he actually crossed the checkered flag in front on Chris Jenks, but they both went to different scorers and Chris was Scanned first and given the 2nd Place finish. Chris Jenks offered to take the issue to Racer Productions because he knew that he did cross the finish line behind Jathan, but Jathan wasn't concerned and the results were unchanged.

Congratulations Jathan on another excellent showing in the GNCC Series and I wish you the best of luck at Texas this weekend in the GNC TT Series.

Open A

#90 Bryan Baker continues to impress everyone that way he man handles the 500 lb vForce 700 around the track. byran has finished 7 races this year in the top 35 overall, and has had 4 finishes in the top 20 overall with his 13th Overall at Gilmer, TX being a season's best.

It is great to see Team Green continuing to support the GNCC racers like no other manufacturers, and as I said early, I hope to see the other manufacturers stepping it up next season as well.

Local Boy, PA Rider, Jason Hughes, decided to leave his home state behind and try another race in the GNCC Series. Jason gave it a shot at the Rausch Creek GNCC in the Stock Class, but wasn't able to finish the race after a great start.

This time he decided to give afternoon racing a try in the Open A Class.

Tom Hertz had the biggest come back in the class after starting in 11th he worked his way up to finish 4th behind Jason Hughes.

His charge to the front did require some help from the fans. It totally amazes me how they will pull you out with one hand and hold a beer in the other:eek:

#171 Derek Litterini shifted his weight to the rear to get as much traction as he could climbing the long grass hill. The strategy worked, and Derek would eventually go on to take over the lead before the end of the 1st lap and maintained a steady lead the entire race and ended up finishing 15th overall which was his best overall finish since Steel Creek.

Congratulations Derek on another awesome race, and now it time to move on to the next race and forget about the problems your worked through mid season.

Gary Belbeck had his best race of the season and completed four laps with the help of Cardio Stack, which he recently started taking after being an early critic. He was really impressed at how well he felt during the race, and his muscle cramping was reduced, which is Gary's biggest problem. He is just too strong for XC racing because muscle takes energy.

Congratulations Gary, and I am glad to hear your positive success with Cardio Stack, and I am now convinced after my early skepticism that the stuff must work after other comments that I have heard.

Like everyone else said great job with the race coverage Harlen! I had a fun time for my first gncc race this year. I had trouble with my rear plastics coming off three times during the race. On the last lap I got stuck in the big mud hole for at least ten minutes which landed my a 9th place in sport class.
