There are 2 nuts next to my rear disc on the axle...what is their purpose???

to hold the axle in place

how, they sit in the middle of the threads, against nothing???

They hold it on by tightning against a clip thats on your axle, which pushes the brake hub in and pulls the axle through makeing it tight.
