a buddy of mine and myself both have 400ex's, same year and everything. Mine has a k&n air filter, jet kit, WB slip on, and a WB cdi box. His 400 is completely stock, and he still beats me in a drag race. Why is this? Would a stage 1 hot cam allow me to beat him?

Sounds to me like you need to practice. I would say he is more skilled than you.

did you rejet your quad when you put on the pipe and filter? if not, that could also be your problem

what would skill have to do when you are completely topped out? nothing. his 400 is just simply faster than mine, which doesnt make sense, and no he isnt a better rider

guys....he beats me top end for like 1/2 a mile, my holeshot wouldnt matter by then, we are both revved to the max and he slowly pulls away from me

well then your jetting is off. Play with thatn and you should beat him. How many discs do you run.

Correct me if im wrong but i think that the stage one is for bottom and midrange, and the stage II is a top end cam. So no it wouldnt really help you

Does your friend have bigger tires in the back or do you have smaller tires in the back? This will affect alot. Trust me my friend has a 400ex same year and all but its all stock. I have Yoshi full pip. open air box.and so on. He would always get. I had 18in tires in back and he had 20in tires in back. I would get him sometimes out of the hole. Thats cause I had lots more torqe bottom end. But when we would do a 30mph role I would get him off the start and then he would start to pull on me. After I got some 20in tires in the back I would kill him off the start and top end. That was before I got my engine rebuilt. I also depends alot on skill and the launch.

what jetting do you have in?

you both running the same tires and gearing?

you need to adjust your throttle cable too probably. leave about 1/4 inch of slack in the cable so the carb opens up all the way. if this isn't adjusted properly, it will run much slower than it should.

also, a stage 1 hotcam would help. it is more aggresive than the stock cam and even the xr400 cam. it will rev out a bit higher than stock too. by the way, i have one for sale if your interested. pm me if you are.

Are you fat? I know I weigh about 65lbs more than my wife and with wb with 12 discs, no lid, unifilter and a hotcams stage 2, I am just barely, most of the time, quicker than her on her stock bike. Sometimes we are still dead even. And I am a much better dragger than she is. Weight has a lot to do with speed when you are talking about negligible amounts of horsepower.

it all has to do with gearing!!!
i bet u have lower gears then him!!
or your throttle is not opining the whole way!! know proplem with 400ex's

Read this

Top speed has every thing to do with gearing and rpm's
HP only comes in to play if there is not enough to get you to top RPM and over come the laws if physics.

I bet u I can take a stock 300ex and a stock 450r and make the 300ex beat the 450r in a top speed test!!! by changing the gears!

:eek2:

actually my gearing is different from his. i have a 16 tooth front sprocket and i dropped 2 teeth in the back. I knew it would sacrifice alot of low end but i wanted to see if i could beat him in a long drag race. His gearing is stock and he STILL beats me when we are completely revved out.

You are obviously not revved out, your friend is probably not either. When you are in 5th gear and truly revved out then you will hear the rev limiter kicking in. You do not have enough power to pull those gears to the rev limit.

LBS. pounds make a BIG BIG diffrence!!! Play around with your jettting, rember LEAN is fast, but too lean is HOT

Try running your pipe with no discs, it will increase your top end and see if he still beats you, if he does then something else is going on. A stock 400ex will not pull to rev limiter in 5th, its hard to get my 416 to do it, i have to run 20" rears, normally i run 22"s.

your gearing is giving you the problems. go with stock gearing and race again. also, look at my previous post. it all matters.
