my 400ex top end has been making a slapping/rattleing noise at idle. it will make a slapping noise for a few seconds then it will stop for a couple of seconds. it still makes this noise after its warmed up. it is not the valves because i recently adjusted them and it still does it. do u guys think this is my cam chain and or tensioner causing the noise?

i was planning on getting a crf450 cam chain and maybe the billet tensioner from www.amt-cnc.com.....has anyone used or heard of this tensioner and what do u think about it.

thanks,
max

check the tensioner and make sure its workin right. the spring in it might be bad and it might not be puttin enough tension on the chain.

never used the crf450 chain, but i heard it was good, supposed to be stronger. cant remember if your supposed to retard the timing a little or not when you use it though.

My 400 makes the same noise only @ cold startup. After a few seconds it stops. It has done this since is was brand new.

My ex makes the same noise it looks like 2 me it is the rocker arm you can see it (snap down) with its running and the valve caps off. The dealer told me they all make a noise but thats NOY trus cause i've heard some real sweet sounding ex's

Sounds like someone ran your quad without oil which chewed up your cam and your rocker arms. That is pretty spendy to replace, it also could be you cam chain tensioner. I'd take a look at it and try adjusting it.
