when does it smoke blue, just at start up or all the time. it is probly the oil burning and it may need a new oil ring

Piston rings. I would also replace the valve seals too. Take the cylinder and piston to a machinist and have them check the clearances. You might have to go up a bore size depending on how worn the cylinder is which will also require a new piston. As far as you putting it back together, it should be no problem if you have a manual and are mechanically inclined.

piston, rings,a bore job, and 4 valve seals, and gaskets, should be around $200 if you do the disassembly and reassembly yourself.

Why not just buy new piston rings if the piston is in ok shape, and the valve seals. Instead of getting it bored out, just get the cylinder honed(sp?)

you can use the same piston if it looks good and the cylinder still looks good and only needs a hone, it would be a lot cheaper. i was just tellin ya about what it would cost if the cylinder is in bad enough shape that it needs to be bored.

THIS JUST IN: it only smokes during start-up

rings-$40, all 4 valve seals-$30,head and base gasket-$25. plus a hone job, dont know what the shops around you charge but im thinkin $25.------thats $120 so far.

only speacial tool you need for this would be a valve spring compressor, so you can get the springs off to replace the valve seals, another $25.

if ya take it a shop they will charge you for all the parts above plus its usually around $200 to $250 in labor for a top end tear down and re-assemble. plus another one half to one full hour worth of labor to replace the valve seals(doesnt actually take that long but most of them will charge you for it anyway) labor rate at most shops is $60 to $70 an hour.

if you do it yourself you NEED a manual, there around $25. with this you should have no problems doin it yourself.

if its only during start up then goes away after a minute then i wouldnt worry too much about it. probably just a little oil seepage from one of the valve seals.

sure, C&D racing does. Give them a call, I believe the Clymers shop manual runs around $25.
