Is the rest of the country watching Mt St Helens the way they are here in the PNW? They are saying it could erupt again any time today. Three days in a row, with this one being much bigger than the last two, but not nearly what it was in 1980. They say the lava dome in growing, and Magma is on the move in the channels underneath the mountain. I tried to get down to the Main observitory yesterday to check it out, but they were moving everybody back to a nine mile safety zone.:(

I heard last time it blew that we had quite the winter here. I wonder how much more snow would be gotten here is this explosion is even bigger than the last one. Don't mind me I'm in snowboarding withdrawl.

It erupted today around 9:40. It was just a small eruption.

My professor (professor Alley) is a well respected man in the matter of science. He told us today that it more than likely won't be a big one. He said mt. st. helens is like a lava lamp. One big blurb of lava flows up and then a small one....he said the big blob of lava was in 1980 and that this only seems to be a small one. He has been on the discovery channel many of times. Maybe some better source than the news papers and tv....

Just for a little know how....the eruptions so far have been steam eruptions. Because the groud is getting so hot it is boiling the glacier that sits above it. I got to see pics of it up really close from one of his friends that is out there. Neat to think about...but not when there could be people in danger...the 1980 eruption threw bus sized rocks over a mile....lets hope this one won't be near as bad...

Here is whats neat to think about, we are watching the earth at work. In 1980 the mountain lost over 1/3 of its mass. Some scientists therorize (sp) that what may be happening is that the mountain is "re-growing". in the last few days the lavadome has grown over 150 feet. Some say that the changes we have seen in the last few days could continue for months or even years to come. If in fact they do, at the rate they are now, could our children (or grandchildren) see Mt St Helens the way it was in march of 1980? I highly doubt it will continue for long at the current rate of growth, but it is still fascinating to watch a mountain grow.
