they hit the showroom at triangle cycles in durham last wendsday. i got the red one. they came down to $5500 but then w/ tax and the 4 year warrenty it was about $6500. the reverse is easy. its got a turn key like thing on the right fender. you just turn that and downshift. i should get some pics on the computer by thursday, so ill be sure to post them. im startin to like the front end that i use to think was ugly.

i like honda but somoeone needs to be slaped over there. I buy a 450r and 2 months later they make the 400ex look like it, they should have added reverse and not change the plastic. I need some big *** stickers that say "this is a damn 450 *****" all over my bike. not knocking the 400 i still have mine there great, but should have left plastic alone.

not always, two days after i got mine 01 home its engine went to hell, then the warranty paid for a **** load of other stuff in four years, but i still like hondas:rolleyes:

09-29-2004, 07:49 AM
u musta done something really bad b/c I have never heard of a honda engine going out when its new except when someone does something REALLY dumb.

Did they do any re-design on other components? The plastics are modeled after the 450r, what about other stuff? Will the suspension components swap between the 450r, or the 400EX, or not swappable at all?

personal i dont like it if you want 450r plastics on your 400 that bad then people would but factory 450r plastics and put them on their 400 now if a 400ex get bead in any sort of race people are goin to be sayin honda sucks and are slow

i dont like the idea of have 2 different quads lookin exactly alike

That does seem pretty steep to me too. U could of bought a used one for 1/3 the cost, and only be missing reverse. I don't even miss it on mine. Plus, the older ones are lighter if I am not mistaken.

The local dealer here has had four of them for about a week now.
And they don't look that much like the 450r. the rear is jusst like the old ones, and it still has the same old side panels, and there are no shrouds like the 450r. They don't look that much alike!

Dang they have the 04 450R's on sale for $5499 here plus tax. I think you payed alittle to much for ur quad.

TacomaNC4X4
09-30-2004, 08:28 PM
the 450rs are $6500 here. i could have gotten one but i didn't wanna pay an extra $1000 for no reverse and kickstart. im lazy and where i ride the reverse is a VERY nice thing to have.

How is this thread worthless without pics? The guy bought an overpriced quad and wanted to share it with everyone. Pics have nothing to do with $6500. You can see it on the Honda website. I'm sure his $6500 400ex is the same thing you see there. Congads on your new $6500 400ex.

Looks good but they are right.... you were ripped :(

Pungohboy
10-01-2004, 11:26 AM
I rode with a new one the other day. I didnt hop on because it was brand new and I didnt want to risk hurting the overpriced thing. I was thinking it was the same front plastic with different hood but the front fenders are shaped a little different. The side panels are also missing the little hole indentions. they are just flat. I do like the reverse setup it looks pretty easy although I dont like the fact you have to remove your hand from the bars. I am sure there will be a relocator soon enough if there is not already one.
Of course having 2 400ex's i was thinking i dont need reverse havent yet and probly never will well this guy must have thought he had a 4x4 400ex because he would get us to a point on what he called a "trail" where we would have to get off and i would have to turn mine and my wifes around. while he being lazy would hit the switch and roll back.
Overall from what I seen it was a good Idea by honda because they are making $$$ off the 400ex once again. Because even though some people dont relaize not everyone wants a 450R. I would like one and if i was going to buy a new quad i wouldnt pick a 400 over a 450 but some people would rather have them and for those people I hope yall enjoy riding. I know i have enjoyed my 400 for the year or so i have had it.
Oh yea congrats on your new purchase. Rip it up :macho

I agree that if you want a 400 then get a 400. The problem is that in a consumer stand point it is a poor decision to get the ex over the z now. The z is the same price with a similar stance, a liquid motor, more power, better handling and also has reverse and electric start. The only reason to go with the Honda is brand loyalty. Had the ex been the same price when I bought mine, I wouldn't have touched it. To each is there own.

My 4 year warranty paid off the second year i had it . the bearing went out in the bottom end .. and i had nothing to do with it.. it was another defect..

the best part about getting a warranty is when you are going to resale it because it has got a warranty a lot of people that want you bike it gives them a plus to go ahead and buy it..

Kennethyfz450
10-01-2004, 01:51 PM
I dont know why everyone is picking on the kid because he paid 6500.00 for a 400ex.. its a great bike and always will be a great bike.. i would pick it over a z400 anyday.. if you want to talk about over rated ... the first thing thats comes to mind is the z 400..

some dealers are extreme a holes and they like ripping people off for example their is a dealer 40 mins away that charges full retail on yfz's plus set up fee, plus tax, plus shipping , and storage fee!! and people acturally buy it

they walk out the door close to 8000.00 for a stock yfz.. with all my mods in my signature i dont even have 8000.00 in my bike..

6500.00 is not to bad if he has a good dealer that is nice with their warranty work were i bought my 400ex cause really all he did was pay full retail and tax and a warranty at least they didnt throw and all those other stupid charges..

The Z is a bad quad because you have a bad local dealer?

TacomaNC4X4
10-01-2004, 10:26 PM
$6500 was the out the door price w/ tax, and all the other charges. the retail was $5799, they went down to around $5500. one dealer did come down to $5100 on the Z400 but i dont want it. suzuki puts their motors in artic cats and i dont want nuthin to to with artic cats cause i dont know not one person who will say that they are as reliable as a honda. ive owed 4 hondas, 1 polaris, and 1 yamaha. and the hondas have always held up better.

Even with the liquid cooling and the DOHC the so called 'outdated' 400EX still runs with them.

I don't think that TacomaNC4X4 buying the 400EX was a bad consumer decision at all. You can't buy a more dependable, well rounded and proven quad today.

BTW: I'm not saying that the Z is a bad machine. I'm just saying that the Z isn't the clear-cut better option.

Just buy want you want. If everybody bought the same thing, the world would be boring. The 450r is the big thing now, untill honda comes out with something better, then the 450r will be talked about like the 400ex.

Not to be a dick, but this statement is really, REALLY, stupid on your part. How would you buying a suzuki tie you in with Arctic Cat, which is actually one of the MOST reliable utility lines around. If anything you would be tied to suzuki when you bought an AC.

I would have bought the Z for that much money. My EX back in 99 when it was the hottest thing out was only 6300 out the door...

i know. im just saying they arent pieces of junk. the 400ex is better in some ways. and the z400 is better in some ways. i just liked the power liquid cooling and reverse.

went riding today and had to cut it 3 hours short because the artic cat 300 lost all power and just quit running, AND the suziki 125 dirtbike wouldn't stay running for more then 10 min. at a time. im not tring to say they are all like that..im just saying that most of the problems i hear about are with suziki/artic cats

went riding w a guy that had a 1 week old 450R today and since then, im totally convinced that i made the best decision the the type of riding i do. we raced for about a mile down the road and it wont he only beat me by about 80 yards. not as bad as i thought he would have. i like the 450r but i like the reverse and electric start better. but everybodys diffrent and wants diffrent things.

The front shocks did change out before, BUt the trx450r shocks where about one inch longer than stock 400ex shocks, ANd the 450r rear shock will not fit on the 400ex because the piggyback hit the cases!

We have had our arctic cat 300 4x4 for more than 4 years now and they only problem we had with it was the brakes. They are VERY reliable... its been through a lot too.
