i really love the 250r and its an awesome quad. I found a 250r that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. I would make it a full blown racer. But im wondering, is it still worth it?

Do a search on ebay for what 250Rs are going for now. As long as you are going to use it for yourself they are great,But if you want to get your money back when reselling it ,,,Good luck. The prices have really dropped off for the old 250s. I have seen good condition 89s barely reach 2500$ on ebay.

hell yeah they are still worth it, but if your going to build one do it right, if your going to run a stock frame, your better be a good welder, if you can swing it just build an aftermarket r, they are still competitive with the new fourstrokers!!!!

they are still the baddest.

go for it, definately try to build a R with a aftermarket frame though!!

I'm an old 250R MXer and just from personal experience going from the 2-stroke to the 4-stroke....man you cant hardly beat these new 4-strokes. Reliability is the main issue I would think plus you have to really build up a 250R to get one up to power a 450R is putting out with just a pipe.

Aftermarket frames are $$$ and stock frames wont help up so you are kicking yourself in the *** either way. I loved my 310R, it was fast and fun to ride. It was also decently reliable for a 310 but it still took a lot of patience and tender-loving care to keep it in top running condition. Plus, it was a handful sometimes on the MX track...I'm 10 times faster with my 450 than I ever was with the 310. I will say you couldnt beat my 310 at the dunes though...it was a beast.

With the 450R, I can run her hard at the MX races, wash it off, and put 'er up. She'll be ready to rip next weekend without a problem. Change the oil and clean the airfilter regulary, no reliability issues. I do strip off the plastic once a month to check everything out, just out of habit of doing it with the 250R....

If you have the time and money to put into having a 250R and just love the feeling of riding a 2-stroke, go for it because nothing hardly beats a good ol' 250R. But they are going to the way side of the MX races, take a look at the nationals....hardly a 250R to be seen really. They are few and far between....and if you do see them, they have For Sale signs on them.

I'm not meaning to down the 250R because I loved mine but I think they are taking a backseat nowadays with the new racebred 450s.

The R's are awesome, without a doubt they would still be dominating the pro class if they hadn't been banned. I know two pro riders who would be riding the 250r as opposed to the 450's . Don't get me wron their 450's are awesome but not to the level of the R.
You can argue the modification thing , but the only mods that the Pro rides don't have now is a $2500.00 frame.

Why were they banned?

Actually they weren't banned. The consent decree happened to hit Honda a little harder than the other manufacturers more than likely because of their unit sales at the time. Honda themselves chose to discontinue the 250R in early 1990 with the last year model being 1989. Suzuki continued to make the LT until 1993, and Yamaha never slowed the production of the Banshee.

Honda was trying to save themselves from lawsuits from people who can't be responsible for their own actions.

So does the class only allow currently produced ATV's or what? I know 3-wheeler production was stopped by the government but they came down on 2 stroke 4-wheelers too? Doesnt make much sense to me. I can see them cracking down on the ATC250R but why on the TRX250R? My 450R will totally smoke my ATC250R and the ATC weighs like 60 pounds less. I kinda like 3 wheelers more.

I am with you on that it seems as though they are giving away the 250rs in the northeast, I was at a harley swap meet in stafford springs conn., and you could have had your pic of really nice 250r I saw a few mostly stock ones for 2k-2500. I actually bought a mint 1986 with new plastic and brand new beadlocks and etc ,etc needing no work for $1700. bike looks new this bike would have been close to $4500 before the 450rs I was not looking for one but how could I pass it by for the money! but next season I am going to ad a 450r to the stable(hope my bikes cant hear me) I feel like such trader i have been riding 250r since you could buy them new!!:D

The"ban" mentioned here was a rule saying that only production frames can be ran in the new pro-production class. This leaves out the R because the pros ran only aftermarket frames. This was designed to get the factories back into quad racing. They wouldnt put a factory team out on a 450 if there was a chance that a 250 based quad would win,and kill the sells of the new bikes. This also pleases the tree huggers who hate 2 strokes, kinda the phasing out process. The 450 isnt a magic carpet that will take you to the front because its a 450.If you are faster on a 450 than a race prepped R,then good 4 you.On MX tracks the legal 265 can still hang with the 450s and from what some of the pros say secretly, still out handle the new ones.Bottom line is get the one you are gonna be fast on.As for reliabilty,if you race it,your gonna have to fix it.The 4 strokes arent without problems.

Would they allow a service Honda 250R? I think that's a pretty strong motor.
