Alright I race crosscountry and I am needing more power!!! Right now I have a 400ex with a wiesco 440 kit and its been jetted and has a K&N thats it...ive been looking for a crf450 motor but cant find one easily...I was wondering if I bought a 400ex motor and built if from the ground with with cams, valves, porting, and the whole shabang if it would be worth it...or should I keep looking for a crf450 motor?

You could do a very good CC motor with a 400ex. Get it with the works, cams, valves, professional port job.. a good 440 kit, (not weisco, unless you deck the cylinder and such)

If you did it all yourself except porting and maybe the valves.. should cost you around $1300 . Don't know what a 450 motor costs....

I've been looking around for 450 engines and $1300 is about the least you can get one for, some are in the high 2k's.

$1300???? Since when, last time I checked, CRF's were going for 2k, then you need the radiator, and all the other goodies associated with stickin the motor in the frame

decked out 400ex will be very lucky if it can keep up with a bone stock crf450 and the crfs that are built will run circles around the 400

where are some places I can find a crf450 motor...and all I need is different motor mounts for the engine to fit in the frame right?

Yes...I have seen them go for 1300, even 600! And that was with all the wiring and with the carb.

But most you see going for over 2k and the brand new ones are almost 4k...it's cheaper to buy the entire dirtbike used and take out the engine, wiring harness and carb.

Not true. I can massacre a stock CRF450 engine with my EX. And the mega-built YFZ's are just a step ahead...

I have no problems with stock 450R's and YFZ450's.

yea, since the 400 is built for somewhat lower rpm's, your best bet is makin a torque monster buy stroking it. also drastic cams and oversize valves, but not too large of a carburetor, and a good free flowing exhaust

You need mounts made, the front part of your frame needs converted to to hold a radiator, Need to find away to mount and airbox to the carb, you also need a radiator , kick start extension, diffrent water pump cover, and a custom pipe.
The best place to look would be here, ebay or thumpertalk.
