I know there have been alot of posts on CAMS and I have read all of them, but Terry really recommends the XR400 cam. I do almost every type of riding you can do including some pretty mean hills so I can't lose bottom end from stock, but I know the 400ex needs alot more topend so what cam would be the best for me. But with the higher compression piston the low end would still be better than stock with a GT or TC cam right?

Please help. I am sending my engine off in about 2 weeks and I need to know what to get. If I have a 10.8:1 piston with a GT CAM will my low end be about as good as stock, better, or worse?

look in my sig below,,adding the XRcam,,gave more power from top to bottom,,,NO loss anywere..

Stock bore or 416 w/10.8:1 and a GTT cam will probably have a little less bottom than stock. A 440 10.8:1 is close to even, maybe 95%. (IMHO)

That setup is a good one. You can always add a 14t sprocket to get more bottom end. I use the 14t at the dunes, and I think you'd have a hard time finding a hill that was too steep to climb.

515-402-8005 is the number for Hot Cams. I would give them a call. I would order the stage 1 kit. It is a straight drop-in with more power than the xr cam all over the board. It is only $132.95 from Dennis Kirk when the get them in stock, which should be within the next week. There is no core return to do and you're buying a brand new cam, not a regrind like all the engine builder's cams. I am gonna buy the stage 2 cam for my 440 as soon as they get in stock. I can't wait.

Has anybody got the numbers (lift/durationb) on either stage of the hot cams???

check page 3 of the pwertrain under"ANYONE RUNNING ONE OF TC RACING CAMS?" It should be on the last page in that topic. I also have the specs out of dennis kirk page 257 right here too.

Stage 1-Intake lift:9mm, Intake duration:246, Exhaust lfit:9mm, Exhaust duration:246

Stage 2-Intake Iift:8.8mm, Inktake duration:254, Exhaust lift:8.6mm, Exhaust duration:254.

I called them yesterday and they are really friendly and knowledgable. The first batch of cams should be delivered to them this week then sent out to retailers like WB and Dennis Kirk as soon as they can package them. The guy I talked to said the stage one was for smaller sized engines and that id gives a lot more power in all rpm's, and yes, a lot more low end too. The stage 2 he said worked better with the bigger engines. He recommended the stage 2 to me with out a doubt.

Sorry to disapoint ya Chad, but I sold it to get the money I need for a cam instead. I sold the carb to mysticfalcon and he's putting a 416 and an xr400 cam along with the Lectron in his bike. As for the Hot Cams, I called Dennis Kirk and they said that they are schedualed to be in stock in early May. I didn't want to wait that long, but I guess i will have to. I think I will also call Hot Cams every coulpe of days to see when they are going to have them shipped out so I can be first on the list to get one. The guy I talked to said the 400ex cams are in high demand!

I'm tearing my motor apart tomorow and getting the cylinder bored on monday then i will put the motor back together next friday. I'm gonna break the motor in with the stock carb and get a feel for that then i'm gonna do the carb so that i can see just what the carb will do. I'll keep you guys posted on how everything turns out.

Joe....Keep us updated on the cam situation. I just put a xr400 cam in mine but I think I now want to switch and get another and this one doesnt sound to bad. Does anyone know how much better it is than a xr400 cam? Thanks alot.

If I were you, I would call them. I put Hot Cam's number is in an earlier reply in this post. I will be ordering the stage 2 as soon as Dennis Kirk gets them in. The girl I talked to said the computer said delivery expected in early may.

Howdy bud,

When I rebuilt my motor over the winter, my dealer recommended the XR400 cam as well. Other motor mods include, 11:1 86mm piston. The combination worked well. I also added a high rev CDI.

The motor pulls very hard through midrange. I was disappointed at the performance of top end though. Im currently in the middle of stuffing a WB all around cam in. Im installing it tonight and having my valves adjusted in the morning. If the weather holds, ill post my test run tomorrow sometime.

I made my decision to swap out the XR400 cam after talking to a gentleman by the name of Dave Hopper and a few others. They called the XR400 a "lame cam." (Dave Hopper has a shop not far from here. He was the GNCC champion on a 250R back in the 80's)

Good luck with your motor hoss!

One thing to remember about the xr400 cam, its a stock cam! It is an improvement over the stock EX cam, but I would deffinatly recommend a more agressive cam for the money. They would be a good improvement on a stock 400, but other than that, I'd say go get an aftermarket cam.
