My 400ex needs a new front sprocket. It is a stock sprocket. If i geared it one size bigger from stock, would that grab me top end or torque? I'm not familar with the gearing.

if you wanna go one tooth up on the front it'll go faster but it will lose torque. if you go one tooth down youll lose top end but more torque. so if you get a 16 tooth youl go faster if you get a 14 tooth youll go slower but have more torque.

This is the truth, i dont recommend either, i recommend stock geearin unless u do a lot of flat, strait line drag races or run in very tight woods. The stock gearing is just right for the machine, if anything, play with the rear a little, this is more of a fine adjustment and i think you would be a little happier with that.

Hey Joe, I have bought all three sprockets talk about in this forum(14, 15, & 16). The stock is 15. The 14 will give you a lot of low end power and you will get through the gears quick. You will also lose alot of top end speed, your 5th gear will feel like your original 4th gear. I got it bored to a 416, so I changed back to a 15 tooth. The 14 was way too low. Hope this helps.

Yeah it does help a lot. Im wondering what size i need for the back if i want like a lil more torque and ill sacriface top end. But not too much. Thanks for the time that everyone put on the replies. I appreciate it. I'm only learning

If you want more low end, then either lower the front sprocket or raise the rear sprocket. One tooth on the front is equal to 2 to 3 teeth on the rear. When I was stock, I ran a 14 front and a 37 rear, stock is 15/38.

this is actually very similar to stock gearing. however, it will provide a bit more low end power than stock.

Yeah Cals400ex is right on with the gearing reference. 1 down in the front and 2 down in the rear is almost stock. The rear gear lets you fine tune if the front is too dramatic. I am in the same dilemna, I am using 15/37. I like the 1st gear with the 15 for putting around, but 2nd is too short for long hill climbs. The 16front's 2nd gear seems not torquey enough for hills. I think I am gonna put the 16 back on and change to a 39 rear.
