I was thinking of setting up my 01 400ex for woods racing. This used to be my motocross racer. Engine is still stock but I will have it redone. I have +2 a-arms from houser on it with works steelers without ressies. I'll probably sell the shocks for new. The a-arms only make it 46" wide. Can they be used? I only ran one hare scramble but it was a blast! I used to tear thru the woods back when it was just a couple of buddies riding around. Thanks!

46 inches is just fine for the woods, and the shocks are probly alwrite for the time being.Iwold definately leave the moter stock!!!

Id focus more on the suspension if ur just now getting into woods riding. If money isnt a big problem get some elkas front and rear, a good strong swingarm, with a good skidplate. Razrs or holeshots, or any 6 ply tire. A steering stabilizer is a sweet add on. A bigger gas tank is nice to have. For the front end stay stock width or +1 with 4+1 offset rims. If u wanna get into the engine, get a strong clutch.

I would have to agree with Shep on leave the motor stock. You most likly have already put a pipe on it and that would be all you really need. Shocks and tires is were it is at for the woods. I still don't know why some of you pump up the motors so much.

Now if youu realy wish to do well sell the honda and get a YFZ450.

leave the motor alone, i learned the hard way and watched alot this year. shocks first

spend your money on good suspension. bigger motors have there advanages but in the long run stock is better. i have a z 400 that i race. it s 2 years old and i beat it pretty hard and i never touched the engine yet. it dosen t smoke yet.lol. i wish i had a bigger motor for the holeshot . but i luck out once in a while and get a few. but durning a 2 hour race the last thing i think about is my motor blowing up. good suspension is the key to going fast. if you got the money get a set of axis or elka shocks.

A good engine builder takes all those worries away about blowing up.

I'd like to get a little more power from the motor. It is starting to smoke anyway and needs something. Has anyone tried the shocks from a 450 on the 400? Just wondering. If I go with a new swingarm should I go longer? Thanks for all the help.

I like longer swingarms personaly.if you do moter work isuggest a416 to keep probs minimal.dont know about 450 shocks.

Completly true!!

I would buy suspension and do all your big mods at once! (motor/suspension) The stock motor on a 400ex is super dependable, But as for a feild section goes,or a holeshot u need some motorwork!!! Just a 416,or a 426 built right will run with a stock 450!!!, And those are super dependable motors, and they rev quick, and like the RPM's. Just whatever u decide to buy do research on it first, andf find somthing that u will like, and will actully help u out, Not just look good!!!! Or go fast!!

if you are going to spend alot of money on the 400 your better off selling it and buying a Honda or Yamaha 450, you can leave the motor stock on them and still have plenty of power, plus if get the Honda then your wheels will bolt right on

I would just go with the Yamaha, nothing wrong with the honda but Yamaha has the button, and I like the button. Besides with the yamaha you can look good and go fast.

id say get into the motor and put a wiseco/JE 11-1 piston(stock bore) and put a good all-around cam in it, youll see a nice gain and still just as reliable as stock. but your suspension should definitly come first!
