aluminum air cleaner housing

i saw an article in a magazine that had an aluminum airbox for a 400ex and i cant find it anywhere.

It had a place to relocate the battery inside if anyone has seen or heard of it please let me know the company name or website thanks in advance.

me and my friend are going to make them. We had planned on it for a while untill i started work and fishoing season opened and his quad was all messed up, now school is in session and we are trying to match our schedule to get the peopel to make them and getting the materials etc.
after market companys charge $200 such as graydonproline.com and pingry.

I just made an air box out of aluminum for my 400ex. All it cost me was like $30, the cost of the aluminum. I will post some pics sometime this week once i take some. Battery, all electrical stuff fits inside. But only a K&N filter fits in, i bought a UNI and found out it was too large.

wasn't someone talking about making air boxes themself and selling them for like $100?

I'd get one just to be able to move my battery, but there is no way I'm paying $200 for one :)

The reason why i was going to sell them for $100 is because I am having them professionally wleded. Anyone who knows anything about welding know that aluminum is not easy to weld, it is one of the hardest infact. So you figure about $30 for alumium, bolts, grommit, and wires. Then you have to add how muc it is for the guy to weld it. it brings the cost up fast when u have to pay for labor. Besides, most stores mark up 50%

$100 would be fine with me... I wouldn't expect you to pay $60 for parts+labor and sell them for $61 :)

Thickness i used was .080 thick. I got Sheets of aluminum, 12 inches by 12 inches. I bought 6, I only used 4. As far a dimensions go, you on your own. I didn't make a blue print, I knew what i was doing, i didn't remember any dimensions size wise. I just made it the same size as the stock plastic one. If your wondering how i cut the the hole for the intake boot, I am a machinist :-), work in machine shop. As far as welding goes, i gave it to welder in my shop.

I have modified my air box since i last posted pics. I have 2 pics. Reason i redid my air box is because i hit a big jump and the back of my air box slices my rear brake line. All i did was cut air box higher. You can see for your self in new pics.

Hey,Remimber I said I was going to make one,I just got down doing it.I had it just like your first one and see that I will also have to step it up one more time to clear the brake calipar.Just by looking,It looks real close to the chain.How wide was yours?I did all mine or free.I had all the stuff in my garage and had the weld shop in Vo- tech weld it up for me.

..i talked with the freind of mine that does sheet metal work
and we started thinking--big mistake--?? will i have problems with
making it too big other than hitting the shock / brake rotor / chain-sproket..ect.. what all do i need to make room for in the box to accompany the battery- -wires / fuses/ ect..?? want to make it right the first time ya' know-
or do i just go in cut some metal big enught to fit the hole on my intake's and breather tube. and leave enugh clearance for everything else??--

I was wondering if the air boxes you guys were making would restrict your air flow?
I always thought the box's were make to increase air flow into the filter. Have any of you noticed a difference with your home made airbox compared to stock?

I didn't notice a difference from my home made air box compared to my stock one. When i made it i tried to keep all dimensions close to stock air box. I messed up my first shot. The back was to low and sliced my rear brake line.

going to build me one next week got to get the material i will be willing to build more if any one is interested.maybe we could get some suggestions on what yal want and go from there

I haven't got mine on just yet.I got it in my garage waiting to bolt up my brackets and modifiy it more.I think it is a trail and error type thing if it is your first one.I had my lenght and width EXACTLY the same as stock but when they welded it, it got off about .01 thousands and reallycan't get my stock lid on it.I had to change the height and lower measures ments to get it to clear the brake calipar and rotar/swing arm.i just may not run a lid or snorkel now.I can't ride now anyways cause I am waiting for my lonestar swing arm to come in and put it on.Mine is broken in two places and like in 4 peices
