how do i adjust a 400ex stock suspension to make the shocks harder

For the fronts you just have a preload adjustment, you can make them harder by setting that up. If you look right below the spring you will see part of the shock that has different notches in it. You need to turn that part with your hands, large pliers or a pipe wrench to a higher notch so that the spring is compressed more.

On the back shock you have compression, rebound and preload adjustments. You can set the compression harder with a flat blade screw driver. The adjustment is on the top of the shock on the reservoir, turn it clockwise (towards the H)to harden it. I turn it a quarter turn at a time and then ride test it.
