Is there any advatage to ether? I have my 300ex, and I have only really riden other 5 speed quads, so I'm i used to them. I'm building a 250R and I was thinking of just gearing it really high so thet the transmision acted like a 5 speed, and them have 6th gear just in case I need more speed:devil: Has anyone done this before? Would it be a good idea.

To me, 6-speeds are a lot better than a 5-spd. You have an extra gear for more speed, so there is basically no disadvantage.

I love how I am WOT on my Banshee in 5th gear, then I realize that there is still another gear...man I love that thing.

I really wish my 400ex had a 6th gear for when I am dragging long distances (I also have a 14t front sprocket and 18" rear tires, so that doesn't help any...), it feels like I am doing 30 in 5th gear still.

6 gears are most helpful on quads that have a narrow powerband and not much torque (mainly 2 strokes) with 6 closer gears, you can stay in the powerband alot easier

Last year I topped out at about 85 WPM...big improvement eh?:eek2:

Didn't we already answer it?

6-speeds are for engines without a lot of torque and have a narrow powerband (lots of shifting) while a 5-spd is usually for the broader powerbands (4-strokes, more torque), of course I would love to have a SIXTH gear in my 400EX;) .

I would probably leave the gearing alone unless you plan on making some big engine modifications which call for higher gearing, in which it would probably be better to add a tooth in the front if you are shifting too quick.

Btw- you'll love 6th gear;) .

IMO i think 5 gears are easier because i seem think that i could keep track of what gear im in...but i have only riden 5 speeds.

Then how do you know 5 gears are easier?

6 gears are a lot better because of the extra gear for more speed, I never worry about what gear I am, I just listen to the R's and shift when I need to. 6th is just a bonus:D

You guys need to understand how a transmission works. When you say a 6th gear would make it faster, not faster in top speed because reguardless of how many gears it has, the final drive ratio is 1:1. The extra gears just adds more power vesatility. Like an old 10 speed bicycle versus todays 24 speeds.

If you think that a 6th gear is a special speed gear, try a warrior! Stock for stock, my 400EX (5 speed) would go about 10mph faster than the Warrior with that 6th speed gear.

Yeah that's what I was thinking while reading this thread. I guess some folks just like to 'feel' as if 6th is like an overdrive that provides extra speed.

True, but it would always be nice to have another gear on the 400EX. I always find myself wanting to shift up when I'm in 5th gear, but that might be because I am sometimes used to the Banshee. Either way, I'd take a 6-speed over a 5-speed, just because an extra gear always seems better to me.

jmpulse - I think we're talking about fast quads here, not tanks;) .

yea man i wish my 300 had 6 gears. i ALWAYS find my self at the top of 5th realizing theres no more :(

but yea thats why i geared way tall, now i hardly ever get it up to the top of 5th without a loong straight away

yea my cr 125 thats 5 speed beats my cuzins kx 125 thats 6 speed,
and his bike is an 02 so it should be a lil faster. on my bike i like 5 gears bc like i can hit ne jump from 10 foot up to about 70 foot in 2nd gear, he has to use 3rd at the least and ne thing bigger he has to use 4th, i would never get into a gear above 3d for racing or ne thing.
