Hello! I am going to put an 83 250r motor on my go kart. has anyone done this? I could use some tips/pictures to get me going. I am concerned with the exhaust in particular.

I think he is refering to the air cooled 250R 3-wheeler engine.

Ha, someone needs to do their homework. I suppose you probably thought he was talking about the quads because he didn't mention "ATC", but you should've caught onto that quick if you knew anything about that.

I think it'd be pretty awesome to stick an ATC250R engine on a go-kart, the exhaust would be a problem though, considering how large it is. I've always wanted to put my Banshee engine on a go-kart, I think I'd be afraid to drive it...

What kind of kart? Like a shifter cart? I thought about doing something similar, and I talked to a pro. He said it was suicide, that the 250 engine is way too powerful. He has a 125cc and it's capable of 140mph.

If you're going to do the 250r, keep the motor bone stock, and try to use the stock pipe because it is very mild. A competant welder or pipe builder can probably find a way to cut up and utilize the stock pipe. I certainly wouldn't put a whole bunch of motor mods into it. Them little kart frames don't weigh much, a 60hp motor is probably capable of over 180mph.

It is a three-wheeler motor. the trike needs more love than I am willing to give to it. The motor is fast. When it ran I had a hard time keeping the front end down. I was thinking about cutting the pipe where it turns to put the exhaust next to it. I hope I will be able to keep the pipe close to the original flow. I do know that I will have to experiment with the jetting. I have seen clips of a team in europe that put an 1100cc gixxer motor on a kart. That thing would spin tires in any gear or speed.

Are you talking about a street go kart or an off road kart? I have a single seat off road kart(odyssey like) with a 66HP 440 2 stroke twin cylinder snowmobile engine in it and it hauls! I have it geared for speed and it will go well over 100 mph. Problem is that the chasis is not durable enough to handle all the power/speed. I've had a couple of u-joints blow out on me amongst other things. It's a rush to drive but is really quite dangerous. I would definitly put a full roll cage and 5 point harness on it.

As far as the exhaust, if you can weld it's pretty easy to modify it to work. It may not be tuned perfectly when your done but it'll work. I've seen some 2 stroke karts without expansion chambers at all and just a 4-stroke type exhaust and they still ran good(not that I would recommend this).

Have you guys ever seen the hot saws (chain saws) with 2 stroke engines?
These guys modify those pipes with the expansion chambers.
A good wire feed welder in the right hands should be able to get you close. Just take the pipe you have and try to keep the expansion chamber in the same location (distance from the cylinder) and make it fit the kart.
I think it would be fun on the right kart, I would only try this on a good kart though, No $300 wallmart kart.
I know back in the day Yamaha used to make a 100cc complete race cart. I think now they just sell engines for them.
They have info listed on there website.
Most of the guys I saw running fast carts always ran 2 smaller engines and were in laydown karts.
becarfull and have fun.
