What octain?

I know the emissions lable says to run 98. but you cant just pull up to a pump and get 98 around here, so what do you guys run in your stock to slightly modded 400EX?
The best you can get at the corner pump here is 92, it is way out of my way to go get 98. Is it worth it to buy it and throw in some staybil, or just run the 92.

92 octain is plenty. the 87 will work but the bike runs better on 92. The only time you need a higher octane is when you change the piston compression.

If you can run a 50/50 mix of race gas and premium pump gas, that seems to run the best for me.

Ive never seen where it says to run 98 octane. Even with a slightly modded 400 the 92 octane is fine most of the time unless you go with higher compression

you can always get 104+ brand octane booster in the black bottle if you wanted to........i run it in my R's,,,,,,,,you only ned 4oz in 5 gallons,,,,,,,

Personally, I cant feel the difference between 92 and 98, in my old Polaris anyway.
I havent run Trick in the 400 yet, but like I said I just saw that on the lablel while checking to see what feeler gages I needed for the valves.

That is 98 RON(research octane) if im not mistaken thats the higher number. motor octane number is the one you go by. the number the pumps display is a average of the RON and the Motor octane number!! So a 98 would prolly be like a 92 octane Motor wise. not sure though i might be wrong!

I think yer right! pump octane is an average between the two.
I cant believe I forgot that. It is somthing they teach you in tech school too:o
take the average between motor and research and you get the pump #

atleast when u run 100 octane or better you dont have to smell that cheap gas, i would rather sit there and smell the 100 or 110 versus 87 or 92, only down side is the price.

Honestly I run 92 and have had no problems at all. Now I have noticed a little difference between B.P. and Shell. lol

No not at all.... you just tend to get less performance out of it...tend to hear the valves easier when it gets older... it doesn't burn as clean so you get more buildup...on and on..

It could hurt it, but probably not on a stock motor. The 87 detonates a little easier than the 92, but probably not enough to matter on a stock compression motor...

I have noticed excess valve noise on it, but I just figgured it had a noisy valve train after I had the dealer adjust it (10 hr. tune up) and it didnt go away. I wasnt really impressed with them, they told me that the miss-aligned front end was correct...They actually showed me in the service manual where it said the specs for the front alignment, sure enugh, it was about one inch off on the one side. I told them it was a typo, but they didnt believe me. I would bet everyone who has not adjusted thier alignment has it off. If I ran 92, it would be better for the valves then, or what? I dont see where the connection between valves and octane comes in. I ran 92 in it and noticed a big difference, but the guy paying for gas says 87 is good enugh. Oh well, 87 is better then no gas!

114 is VP C14 isnt it?? Why you run so high of octane. Do you have a bigger bore or just a higher comp piston?? Seems like you would be fine with VP red(105) or even C12

You WOULDNT want to run 105 for 13:1, 110 at the lowest.

We buy 114 octane by the drum because we have a drag car so I just use it. I agree w/ alky not use anything under 110.

I dont understand why my town doesnt have gas stations with race gas. there is a few performance shops that sell it but no gas stations. And I live in quite a big town too!!!

All I can seem to find around here is Turbo Blue 115 leaded.....it works hella good 50/50 with 93...smells good too.
What have you guys heard about "cam 10"? Theres a gas station gonna carry that here in May
