Well I just got back from seeing my surgeon that operated on my leg after I got hit by a dirtbike a few weeks ago while riding . They removed my old cast , took some x-rays and put a new one back on . Anyways ... I brought along the camera cuz a few people wanted to see what kind of damage was done to my leg . I gotta warn you , some of these are pretty nasty .

The inner part of my calf .. Where you see all the stitches , that aint where the doctor cut me , thats what the bone ripped . Doctor thanked me for saving him the trouble of doing any cutting except for at the knee and ankle.

Now the good pictures ... check out these x-rays

Rod from my knee to my ankle with screws holding everything together.

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid138/pf939e4428eb3bbecc7a50a26eda10fae/f717926f.jpg

Check this baby out . Notice in the middle there wire holding bone together ... lots of empty space where there is no bone . Off to the left of the rod you'll see the other bone that's broken . Between the wire and the top screws you can see where the bone is broken in about 10 places .

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid138/p14cd610adf82de5fe17878825eee7ca0/f717928a.jpg

Draw a line straight across from where my dad's finger is and go down about an inch and you'll see the piece of wire ... look just underneath the wire you'll see its concaved a little bit ... that means NO BONE !!!

Really opens your eyes when a doctor tells you that and tells you it's the worst break he's seen in his 20 or so years of doing surgeries .

same here. i only had 3 breaks and a hairpin maybe in my hip. they said there probably was one now but they couldnt tell 100% cause it was so small. anyways it really makes you think twice.

mixmaster- you broke a blood vessel in your leg man. get that taken care of cause that would kill your leg or kill you. the blood will clot and then the clot will move to your brain causing a heck of a stroke.

anyways with that said i think i may be leaving the sport. they said if i mess up my knee femur at all anymore they say i can said goodbye to walking. now some of you "tough guys" say eh oh well. but trust me and greg knows what im talking about it really makes you think when you almost lose something as imprtant as walking. i cant get up in the morning without extreme pain with the rod settling. i phsyically cant run more than 1 mile cause my legs are different lengths and my knee swells up so big. its skary and i dont think its a risk im willing to take anymore. greg (quad18) do you have AOL or MSN messenger?:) by the way i almost lost my right leg cause when i broke it it cut the artery in my leg and it swelled so big and clots were forming in my leg. that sure was skary and im glad i still have a leg. even though it does have hardware! btw you are going to have fun at metal detectors especially with a over zealous worker:eek2:

thanks..im going to the doctor now...maybe they will dope me up on pills

MixMaster,
You have a Hematoma, I had one in my calf back in college. they took the worlds biggest needle and drained it. Prepare yourself, zero fun.

QuadStar,
It's good to have legs like Chewbacca, they hide all the scars.

ya i was just gonna ask you about that. Thats one sick wreck man, im still in shock how the hell they got that metal brace all the way up to the top of ur leg, to the bottom. Your gonna have to be so careful for the rest of your life with that in your leg, its serious shiet. My friends dad got in a sled wreck last year and did the samething as you did, he got the same brace on his leg too, his might be a bit worse than yours. He was in a cast for 11 months, and limping for the rest of his life. Now he rolled his 4-wheeler and broke his neck, when i was over at his house last week I saw him with a big Halo on his head holding his head and neck straight, screws that go into his head to keep it stable... sick stuff.

Good luck with that, if your going to continue riding after that, you should stay outa racing atleast, it woke take much to break that again.

AWWWW DAM...I wish I woulda known wut Graphic Images meant before i opened this....NASTY...

lol but seriously...I dont know wut I would do the doctor told me if i messed up again I wouldnt be able to walk..I live to ride but walking is something very important...that would be a hard choice...but its wut i love so i would take the chance and ride...but im still young im sure when i get older and have kids and things ill be more worried bout that kinda stuff then riding...

I'm sure you will be able to ride when it's strong enough to support weight. You will probably not be able to take any jumps really for a verrry long time I'd guess. No reason you couldn't ride though, just know your limits and take it easy. May not be the kind of racing you want to do, but you can still ride.

Where are you going to college? Freshman or Sophmore?
They're still pushing Atlas Shrugged?

Let the Intelligencia-Left lead you from religion while at college cuz as soon as you have a kid, you will be led right back by a human who can't speak and drools on themselves 24/7.

Ya I know what you guys mean about taking it easy with riding and racing . I'm gunna take the doctors advice after everything is healed up and see what he has to say about me riding / racing or not . He told me that it is a bonus that I am young ... my bones will heal alot faster and stronger than most older folks but it's still a serious break and shouldn't be taken lightly . If he tells me I can't race MX anymore , maybe I'll take up TT racing or soemthing like that .... if no racing at all , I wouldn't mind trying to open up my own shop or helping out a local race team .

Umm,actually I would be a junior in highschool and am reading the book for my own reasons including entertainment, to see how the author regards certain philosophy's and issues. I'd say I agree whole heartedly with the majority of the book(including the idea that original sin, altruism, and other such beliefs are morally appaling). I've never found any reason to believe in god, nor found any evidence, rather the evidence points to the contrary in my opinion. Yes the majority of teachers are liberal. The entire institution almost is categorically liberal. I would identify myself personally, as holding more right leaning outlooks on national, and internation matters; I am however completely against the policing of morality by the government especially from religious beliefs. The government role has no place in controlling what I do in my home if i am not endangering others, or preventing others from having all their rights. When I have done political tests... I am a centrist, a moderate.. with leanings to libertarianism in social issues, and conservatism in all other matters.

Just got back from seeing a plastic surgeon about the black dead tissue on my leg . He said it should heal itself and it doesn't look anything out of the ordinary after an accident like the one I had . Second good news out of this whole ordeal .... No need for skin graphs or plastic surgery .... ( first good news was I didn't lose my leg )

Dude I had horrible open knee surgery as well man and got a scar horizontal across my whole knee. Your leg looks pretty atrophied out man just like mine did. When my leg got out of the immobilizer I didnt even have a calf really or quad muscle anmore, just a bone and a protruding knee. Hate to break it to ya but the REAL fun starts in physical therapy..... I swear some of those therapists are sadists at heart, the rehabilitation was about as bad if not worse than the surgery... Stay tough and make em give you some good pain pills!!!

Wow Greg that is the first time I saw this post and the pictures. Yup you really got tore up buddy. I would have to think long and hard about your next step (no pun intended) I am almost ready to put some weight on my repaired ACL this week after the doc releases me to do so. This compared to yours is peanuts but non the less making you think.
I start PT in about 2 weeks and them muscles go fast too nothing, hope your recovery goes well!;)

Thanks for the well wishes . I get to see my surgeon ain the beginning of October and I'll take more x-rays and maybe I'll see if I can snap a few pictures of how the tear in the skin is healing . My leg has wasted away to almost nothing , and I can wrap both my hands around the top part of my leg now . I was told that once I get to working the muscle again , it will rebuilt itself quickly , but thats 6 months down the road if I'm lucky .

Yes I know I have hairy legs .... but winter is comming and the hair keeps me warm ;) j/k

god damn dirtbikes

that sucks the worst i have ever broke anything is my arm and it was just in a cast for 4 weeks, that sucks, but tape a stick to the foot brake lever, and get some nerfs for a leg rest with cast on and keep on riding.

When I was laying in the dirt and the medics cut my pant away from my leg , I asked if anyone had a camera to take a picture of the bone sticking out and my leg bent out 90 degrees . When I looked up while talking , I realized there was no one around me except the medics .... everyone kind of backed off after they had their curiousity fix and seen how bad it was . I never looked at my leg when the pant was cut away , because I knew I would have passed out if I'd have seen it . I just wish someone would have snapped a picture of the leg though .... now I'm curious to see what it really looked like .

Theres no worst sound in the world , than listening to broken bones rub up against eachother . Because of the position I was laying in , I couldn't put my knee flat on the ground cuz of the leg being out 90 degrees and twisted a little and everytime I'd move the knee to try and get comfortable the bones would rub . I finally said screw it , and grabbed my $80 pair of goggle and my gloves and shoved them under my knee for support .

The medics wanted to cut up my jersey , but I said there was no way in hell ..... my back or neck nor my arms were broken so I told them I / we could slip it off . Everyone got quite a laugh about it ....

they told me i could have lost my leg, when i tried to stand up, i tore up some muscles from the bone cutting them up, and barely missed the artery, which, the bone then smashed it, cutting off circulation all the way to the hospital, which may be the wierd numb feeling i had, till he yanked on it, and yess, it is very scary having your mom or dad tell you your leg lost circulation and may have to have been amputated, it woul dhave rotted off me before they cut it off, lol

Check around on the different types of ACL repair, I just had mine done using a piece of your hamstring, this is much less invasive than the old style slice down the middle of your petella "kneecap".
All I have after 3 weeks is a 1 1/2" scar on my shin. I am now able to apply 40lbs of weight and should be walking in 3 more weeks w/o crutches. All this with almost no after surgery pain. My doc is at the Cleveland Clinic/ sports medicine Dr. Fumich.

yea im only 16 so i cant have the final surgury untill i am like 18 b/c of my growth plates are still wide open and it is tooo dangerous right now so i still gotta have a scope done to fix the cartlidge and i gotta wait untill my other ankle to heal so i got a little ways but once my knee heals i can walk w/o my acl. it sucks

Well i just got back from a meeting with my surgeon this morning . Things are finally starting to look better . They took off my cast , snapped a few x-rays and to my surprise , he put me into an Air Cast .... the kind that is removable . Finally I'll be able to start bending my knee .... I can straighten it out without a problem , but bending it upwards is nearly impossible . He wants me to slowly get it moving around , same with my ankle . Feels great to be out of a full leg cast . I'll now be able to take showers instead of the dreaded spunge bath I had to give myself everyday . No wonder my leg was so damn itchy .... the skin was so dry and I was litteraly pulling clumps of my leg hair off .

Something interesting that I learnt today , was that when I first went into the operating room and the rod was inserted , the doctor said it was the easiest one he's ever done because of how little bone was left . He was litteraly able to insert it from the top of my knee and with the gash the bone made when it ripped the skin , he was able to put his fingers in and guide the rod down because there was hardly any bone to support it .

From the x-rays today , I was REALLY able to see how much bone was really missing from the one area .... he once again congratulated me on the wonderfull and worst break he's ever seen .

Still has the black scab ... doctors are worried that there isn't any flesh underneath and that the scab is just sitting on the bone . I will find out tomorrow if skin graph is needed ... if so what they do is cut around the scab and join the rest of the flesh together . If skin graph is needed , the other surgeon will do more bone graph at the same time ....

Use a good lotion.... I know it sounds girly, but that's what you need.... it'll take care of the itching of course, plus it'll help with the dryness and the hairs will eventually grow back... they just need oxygen... lmao leave it to a woman to give advice on skin care... :blah: sorry hehehe

Thanks .... and thanks to everyone that has given me advice on how to get better and has given me well wishes on a speedy recovery . It's a long healing process and sometimes it gets discouraging when things don't go the way you want them to .... but hey I've been through worse ( put a stick through my stomach when i was 17 and almost didn't make it) .

There's a saying that says " You can knock me down , but you can't knock me out " and well I'm really stubborn so I ain't gunna let this stop me from doing what I love doing ... unless I'm advised that I may do further damage if I continue . ;)

Quadvirgin , I had a doctor prescribe me a really gentle lotion to help with the itching and dry skin ..... so I'll see how that works .

86350x .... you're right .... a Rev will be in my garage sooner or later . :D

When i was 17 , I was at the tarck and this kid decided he was gunna take my line while I was doing a double . Instead of landing on the kid and most likely killing him or breaking his neck or back , I decided to bail from my quad by "throwing" it away . When I landed , I landed on a 3 inch round stick that passed right through my stomach/intestines . They rushed me to the hospital and were going to fly me down to Toronto which is a 4 hour drive ... so maybe 1 1/2 hours flight but the doctors in town here figured I wouldn't make it .... they gave me about 45 minutes to live . Needless to say , they did emergency surgery . I spent the better part of a month in ICU and about another month in a regular hospital bed ... hooked up to machines and tubes pumping stuff out of me . Also needed a blood transfusion because of it . Trust me ... it really makes you open your eyes , when you're laying on a stretcher and you hear the doctor tell your parents that if they don't do anything right now , that you're going to die . Really made me appreciate life alot more . Thats why I feel fortunate that this accident ( broken leg) wasn't as bad as the stick incident . I was in the hospital with the same kind of accident ( stick) as a pro racer in Motocross and Snow Cross ( Ian Hayden ) had ... both a day apart . Talk about ironic .

Ya exactly ... life is too short to worry about small stuff . If you let it get to you , you're going to live a miserable life and miss out on a lot of things . I can honestly say .... there are very few things that I ever regret doing in life so far . And I'll be back riding sooner or later . With this short cast , I can now swing my leg over the quad :D ... once I get a bit more strength , I'll be bale to push down on the brake peddle and maybe do a few turns around the driveway . :blah:

Most likely for life ... or until it gives me any problems . The screws will need to come out and be replaced with stronger ones before I can put any weight on my leg . They'll break if theres any weight or pressure put on the leg .

The doctors was saying that if the bone doesn't start forming around the rod , he'll have to go in and adjust the rod and maybe even put a larger on in there .

I'm not sure ..... they still need to go in there and rebuild the bone that is missing . So I figure once he gives me more surgery dates ... then give it time to heal on it's own ( a month or 2) , then they'll decide if the rod is serving it's purpose or not . I'm not out of the woods yet ..... one of the first things he told me when I got out of surgery , was that this is going to be a VERY VERY long healing process.

My dad has to have his hip replaced(he's trying to wait till spring), and he's only 50. I just bought him a dirt bike too. I planned on doing some single track riding this year. I hope he can still do everything he can now. And get to retire without a hitch. He only has 5 years left too.

Hopefully you don't have to have a rod in there permanently.

It's not that my parents won't let me .... hell I'm 21 years old . I just think that I better not ... I don't want them worrying about me all the time . I know the dangers of these things .... the speeds are crazy ... and I know I'll hurt myself again ... I just love the speed and I get fearless with it . I'll end up around a pole , in a guardrail or something . I'd rather do something in a controlled environment . I don't even think I'm gunna race MX next year .... If all works out well , I have a freestyle ramp that I'm able to purchse , which I will use for my quad and for when I buy a snocross sled .

Alright .... well time for my monthly update .

I was up at 6:30 this morning to be at the doctors early so that I didn't have to wait another 3 hours and crap . Made it to the hospital at 7am ... signed in and still had to wait an hour and fifteen minutes ... ah well .

Anyways ... I got a few more x-rays taken today and things seem to be healing up fairly well . There are still places where you can see the broken pieces of bone , but most of them are starting to fill themselves in and reattatch together . My surgeon had a student doctor training with him today , and he was explaining to her how sever it was and so on .... she asked him how he would classify this break .... and his responce was that this is what he calls the " Corn Flakes Break" LOL . He explained to her that when he operated on my leg the first time , it was like opening up a box of corn flakes , pouring it out on a table , and trying to piece them all together . He also said this was the first time he ever had to use wire to hold the two larger pieces of bone together . The look on the students face was priceless . I swear there was 5 or 6 nurses all gathered around the x-rays taking a look . All aweing and making wierd faces . LOL

Anyways ... more good news besides the fact that bones are joining , is that he is allowing me to put about 50 lbs of pressure on my leg now . I still need to wlak with crutches , but atleast I'll be able to start using my leg a little more and speed up the process .

Bad news , is that he figures I'll have about 1/2 a centimeter limp for the rest of my life and that he ordered me off work for atleast another 6 months . He yanked the scabs off the wounds and took the stitches out today ( the ones I didn't take out myself lol) and it's still really tender underneath , but seems to be healing up slowly .

All in all , not too abd of a day at the doctors . :D

Well thought I'd give a little update on the situation ( and Im sitting at home bored) ... Had another Appointment with the surgeon today ... looks like everything is start to heal up well . Where all the bones were broken near the knee area , they have seemed to come together and healed up good now. The fractures near the ankle have healed good also . I'm still missing that chunk of bone in the center , but there's plans to fix that up soon .

I actually have to go for a day surgery in January some time ... the 2 screws in the ankle area are gunna be taken out and a sharp piece of bone below my knee is going to be shaved down . The doctor is worried that if I get hit in that area , the bone will come through the skin . :ermm: Good news now , is that I'm able to put my full weight on my leg so I can finally start to work it and get more muscle built up . Crappy part ... Im still not allowed to drive :macho :grr:

Well I go back on the cutting board again tomorrow morning at 9am. For anyone keeping count , this is surgery #3 to fix the leg . Tomorrow they take out 2 screws in my ankle and fix up a piece of bone in the upper part of the leg . It's an "in and out" surgery ... go to the hospital in the morning ... back home that afternoon .

This time I'll try and count how many seconds I can last before the sleeping gas knocks me out . So far I think I've only made to 8 on a 10 countdown . :p Hopefully the Doctor lets me keep the screws that he takes out .... I wanna start a collection . ;)

Well it only took them about 45 minutes for the surgery .... i was in and out in less than 3 hours (home before noon ).

They wheeled my into the operating room and my surgeon had the stereo cranked with some heavy music playing ... he told me he never operates without music . lol Anyways I lasted up to the 7 count this time but was forcing myself to not fall asleep . It was the best damn sleep i ever had . :D I even got to keep the screws . woohoo:devil:

A bit of pain right now and swelling but nothing i can't live with ..... now its the countdown to surgery # 4 .

Probably about another 5-10 months . That was what the surgeon told me the last time i seen him in a clinic for a follow up
.. thats to walk without crutches . It'll be about another 10 months to a year before everything is back to somewhat normal with me leg .

Thats exactly what I said . :p I woke up and seen 6 stitches ... I laughed and said I've had worse paper cuts .

Funniest part was when I woke up in the recovery room . They had given me a glass of water so I'm sitting there and they wheel this other guys into the room .... he had just gotten outta surgery and was still dazed . So they wheel him across from me but he's facing me . He's probably in his early 30's ... he sits up all confused ... looks over at me and gives me a thumbs up . I gave one back ... his eyes were all crossed and you can really tell he's dopped up on morphine or other pain killers . After the thumbs up , I never seen someone pass out so quickly . Made my day . hahahaha

Quad18star
03-23-2005, 07:58 AM
Alright .... well I'm bringing this one back from the dead . Just a little update on the condition of things for those that have been following or wondering ... if you haven't .... too bad I'm gunna post this anyways. :blah:

This morning I met with my doctor once again and things are comming along very well . He's pleased at the progress I've made by being able to walk and told me to continue doing whatever it is that I'm doing . After looking at the xrays , he was able to see where all the bone has joined itself together where it was broken in about 15 places .

I'm still missing about an inch of bone in my Tibia but the progress in the last 7 months has been awsome . Between having a bone graph , doing excercises , using an Exogen Bone Generating machine and getting plenty of Calcium ... the gap has gone from about 3 inches to about 1 inch . :D

Other great news for the day .... He gave me the OK to start driving . It's gunna feel weird getting behind the wheel after not driving for 7 months ..... Driving = Freedom :D He still told me to stay off work for atleast another 8 weeks or more . He wants the bone to grow a bit more before sending me back , plus he's sending me for Physio Therapy so I get more motion in my ankle .

Now here's the BIG ONE ...... I asked him once again about what he thinks of my riding my quad in the future . He said " Greg you know what I think about quads and dirtbikes . I see a LOT of people come in here with broken bones and fractures because of these things " I told him I understood . But when I asked him if my leg will br strong enough to take the abuse of riding in the future ... he said it will be strong enough , if not stronger than it was before . He told me that I WILL be able to ride again , but if I want to get into racing I should let him know so that he can take out the rod . He's seen guys get in accidents with the rod in , and they've had to use diamond cutters to go in and remove the rod cuz it bent . SO I'm able to keep the quad .

My girl said sell the quad , cuz I can ride her harder and longer than the quad . :D I told her ... "Why can't I just ride both" and she smiled and told me that the quad better not get ridden more than her . Ahhhhh Life is Great !!!!:p :D

She's pretty supportive , and wants to learn to use the clutch for the quad this summer . Scary part is , I think she'll be faster on it than I am . She's got no fear at all .

Little bit of an update ... it's been 10 months since the accident and I still ain't riding . :grr: There is more surgery in store within the next couple of months . The surgeon is going to remove the rod I have in my leg right now , and put in a larger one . He says it will help the bone grow quicker and stronger . The gap where the bone was missing , is down to only about 3/4 - 1 inch , compared to the 3 inches it was at before . It's been killing me to go out riding , especially since the weather has been awesome , but my better judgement has told me to keep off until everything is healed up properly .

I wonder if I can get a machine shop to make me a nice tie rod when the surgeon removes the rod out of my leg . I think it would be pretty trick to have a titanium tie rod that was once a rod holding my leg together. :p What do you guys think ???;)

Time flies doesn't it?? It was one heck of a long winter though .... especially since it started snowing at the end of October and didn't stop until mid April !!! I couldn't really do much either cuz I was in a cast and on crutches and the temps were FREEZING this year . But I'm starting to believe my surgeon , when he told me it will take 1 1/2 years or more to heal up . :( Oh well ... those are the consiquences of the sport I guess . Good thing about it , the quad is keeping very low miles and I'm having time to add parts to it . :p I think I'm gunna set it up as an XC machine . :D

Well it's official .... next month I'm going in for surgery #4 on my leg . :grr: The bone isn't growing much anymore , where I lost a good chunk of the bone , so the doctor is going to remove the rod I have in there right now and stick a larger one in . Another night is going to be spent in the hospital for this one . He said the surgery should take about 2 hours . He's gotta cut my knee open , cut through the Fibula and Tibia near my ankle so that he can push the rod out . Gunna leave me with a few more scars again .

Positive note ... this SHOULD let the bone grow , all other fractures have healed up well and I should only be on crutches for a couple of days afterwards . :)

Surgery for August was cancelled and will be rescheduled for sometime this fall . I can't wait for it to happen , cuz my leg feels like it's getting worse instead of better . Major pain shooting from my knee down to my toes with a ton of swelling . I don't know if this is because the weather is changing ... winter is just around the corner , or if I put something out of line . :ermm:

Bad news ... still no riding for about another 6 months

Good news ...... court date has been confirmed for February 20th , 2006 . And hockey season is about to start so this winter won't be as long as last year . :D

I got a call from the surgeon this morning , he wants to do surgery this Friday . I really wish they would give me more than 3 days notice . Once again I'm going to have to cancel it cuz I got no one to drive me back home the following day . This sucks the big one !!!!:grr:

Hey, watch the back talk son! :D

But seriously, sorry about your luck bro. Surely you can find someone to give you a ride home...(?) It seems like doctors are the best at NOT giving ample notice before wanting to see you. But it sure seems like they need at least a month's notice before they even consider seeing a patient...rat basturds!

Crappy part about all this , is that my mom is 5 hours away so she can drive me , my dad just left this morning to go to our cottage ( before i found out about the surgery) , my GF doesn't have her license ( :@ ) , and all my family is away this weekend . :grr:

Ah well ... I'll just reschedule for a later date ... no big deal . :) My family Dr hooked me up with more drugs this morning so I'll be good to go for a few more weeks .

It kinda goes like that , except "sorry muffin" is usually replaced with either " god damnit" or a few other choice words ... then I stomp all the way to washroom , slam the door and jump in the shower . Well I had the surgery done on Monday .... and all I gotta say , is thank god for pain killers . Bone surgery has to be the most painful surgery of them all .

I went under the knife at 11am and everything took about an hour to do . The surgeon cut my knee open and make a small cut on the side of my leg to remove 2 locking screws . He then pulled the Titanium rod out . In order to put the other rod in ( larger rod) , he had to ream (?) the bone out . The original rod was 8mm in diameter by 330mm long .... the new rod is 10mm in diameter by 330mm long and I only have 1 locking screw holding things now . He also had to shave bone away from my knee to get the old rod out cuz it had grown over . Right now I got a total of 11 staples keeping the cut closed ... 8 across the knee , 3 on the side .

My knee felt like it was swollen to the size of a basketball and I had to stay over night in the hospital ... YAY !!!:grr: It's still pretty swollen right now and I still got lotta pain and can't bend my knee very well , but I've started to walk it with the help of a cane for the last couple of days now ( very slow going ) . The surgeon told me he thinks this will be the last surgery I'll need and everything should be back to normal in a few months .... he's even setting me up with the top sports therapist here in town to get all the strength and mobility back to normal . :D

But for now , I have a really sweet looking titanium rod and screws that need to be hung up in the garage to remind me of what I've been through . These things could prolly fetch a good dollar on Ebay .... nice chunk of Titanium that's light as hell and is anodized a sweet looking blue !!!!

So there's another update as to how my week has been so far !!!

Very good description of it all...yikes!!
My knee still wobbles and locks out and I can run pretty good now. I found that bike riding did the most for my recovery. You can isolate one leg if you have clips on your pedals and really work it. I know that is a long way off for you though.

There was nothing to be nervous about .... this is routine stuff for me .... if I ain't under the knife atleast twice per year , there's something wrong . LOL :ermm: Josh , just wait till you see this new piece of hardware .... it's pretty awesome looking . I'd snap a few pics of it , but it's all the way downstairs in the car , and I don't feel like doing 3 flights of stairs again .

Stairs + Non bending Knee = Pain to walk up !!!!

Thanks to everyone that's helped me out !!!!

Soon Bart Soon .... I'm hoping to have a little something after February 20th .... when this whole court thing with the insurance company settles . I already got it all picked out .... she's the deluxe model . It's an 8-10 person hot tub , with 2 loungers in it . Got a whole whack of massaging jets , got a CD player built in , has a mister for the summer time to keep the bugs away , a whole bunch of different coloured lights under water and all around the trim and it even has a little waterfall thing . Should run me around $14 000 Canadian . This sucker is the king of all hot tubs !!!

im only 13, and i have a rod from my hip to my knee. and its all because iu wasnt wearing a seatbelt and my gramma hit a tree at about 75 mph. the bad part about it was that i had trained all summer long for soccer and try outs were only a week away, now i have to limp arould with this dam rod in my leg, and by the way, u can go through metal detectors just fine, so dont worry about a gay guy strip searching u at the airport(that really happened to my cousin):o

I believe all the rods are made of titanium ... I know mine is for sure , as well as the screws .

My leg was pretty messed up , so I was on crutches for about 7 or 8 months . But after my most recent surgery , I used the crutches for maybe a day , then went to a cane .... now I'm walking without anything . Everything is still sore though and I don't have full movement ... can't wait to start therapy and get things back in order .

Had my first physio therapy session tonight . It's one of the many that I'll be going through to get strength and mobility back to somewhere around normal .

The initial part of the therapy will be for 1 hour per day , 3 days a week for the next six weeks . After that the therapist will re-assess(?) me and see what type of progress has been made and continue on from there .

Tonight I was on the stationary bike for about 20 minutes , and WOW does my leg ever kill me tonight . I have a feeling , pain killers are going to be my friend for the next few weeks . :ermm:

I broke mine when i was riding my brothers bone stock 400ex back in the woods. There is a natural double on the side of a hill and we hit it just because its one of the only jumps there. Well it was wet out and i had it hammered and the rear end slid out and i was going in the air sideways and there isnt much air time so by the time i landed my foot was under the foot peg and even with MX boots it snapped both bones in half. My leg was limp and i could feel the bones moving around. I told my friend to take me home now. It was a good mile and a half ride on the quad. We then crossed the road and rode down his street and i rolled off the quad and he called the ambulance. 3 days later i was good as new :D

Sucks about your injury .

Mine wouldn't have been too bad if it would have been a clean break , but because everything got pushed into my frame , the bones basically exploded . :ermm:

Willow2679 ... I couldn't start any therapy before , because the bones were still broken in too many places . Also the surgeon knew I was going to need more surgery , so instead of me doing physio , then having surgery and restarting back at square one , he just waited until now to get me going on it .

I had another session this morning and right now everything below my knee is killing me . Rode the bike for 25 minutes , did ankle stretches and other stretches for a good 35 minutes .... then put the heat pack to it for 15 minutes . After a few days , the physio guy is gunna see how much pain I'm in ... then he said he's gunna start pusing things harder . YAY !!!!:ermm:

Well today was my last round of x-rays and my last visit to the hospital ( touch wood) for my leg . They took 2 x-rays and the gap is closed now and everything else is healed up pretty good . I have the 2 x-rays sitting here beside me , and I'd post them , but my camera is over at my parent's place .

Still got another couple months of physio to gain my strength back and get things back to normal , but the Doctor figures everything should be back in top shape within a few more months . He explained that I'm always going to have pain from the knee down and it's something I'm going to have to live with and overcome . He also said it's better to live with pain than have a prosthetic leg , which he told me that he's very surprised that he didn't have to amputate it . He explained that with the severety of the high impact fracture, the fact that there was so much dirt and grime in the wound and undergoing 4 surgeries .... that it's a miracle I never had any infection set in the bone which usually calls for amputation .

Now the fun part starts ..... court date is set for February 20th for a " discoveries" ... then who knows how long it will be until things get settled . :ermm: I also have to decide wether or not I'm going back to school or go find another job .... My employer just sent me my lay-off papers the first week of January :ermm:

Thanks .

The discoveries is a part of the court process . Both lawyers exchange info that they have .... i get asked questions ... they get asked questions and so forth .

There is a lawsuit going on ... the guy had no papers .... no insurance .... he left the scene of the accident .... his mother took him out knowing they had no papers for the bike ect . Because they had no insurance , my insurance was forced to foot the bill for everything and my insurance has gone up because of it .

This case has many different things going on ... reckless driving , no insurance , no registration , knowingly breaking the law , lost wages , medical expenses , permanent injury , pain and suffering , etc . It get's REALLY complicated and sometimes I even get confused , even after hearing about it everyday for the last year and half . :ermm:
