how to tighten chain

I know dumb question..... How do you tighten a chain on a 97 300ex and a 01 400ex? I don't see any adjustment in the rear of them. And yes I'm a newbie learning about quads

theres 2 allen key bolts on the rear axle carrier, loosen them, then on the left side of the carrier, theres an odd looking thing that you can turn. what i do is stick the rear end of an adjustable wrench in one of the slots, right through the sprocket, then slowly roll the quad and it moves the adjuster thing.
thats for the 300ex, idk about the 400ex
