I have a problem. I was riding my 88 250X and started hearing a clunking noise. I later located the problem to the rear caliper. When you start riding the whole calpier and bracket attached to the axle clunk forward then fall back. What's the problem here? How do I tighten the caliper? I can't find any bolts to tighten the bracket to the axle. Did I break this bolt?

my 91' 250x does the same thing. The whole caliper and mounting bracket move back and forth about 1/2 an inch both ways. i dunno how to stop this either. i just took my whole caliper off, rebuilt my rear master cylinder and am tyin to find someone to rebuild my caliper. then im gonna try it again. so if anyone nows how to fix this please let s us no!!!

thanks

Is the sleeve that goes around the post sticking off the side of the swingarm still there?

Ya, you should be able to get it from Honda.

Jeff,

What do you mean by the sleeve sticking out of the post?

You may have a bent/warped rotor. If the rotor is bent that could be what is pulling the caliper forward. This is a problem I had a few weeks ago. I had to buy a new rotor.

The swing arm has a post welded to the side of it with a sleeve that goes over it, the caliper bracket goes on over this sleeve. If the sleeve is missing and the caliper bracket is riding on the post then you will have some play in the caliper.

Jeff,

Is it ok to ride like this? Will this cause any damage?

ggg, I would forecast that the more slop you have, the more chance of something else failing.

If the "sleeve" is in place, just a little worn, I would think you would be ok to ride it, avoid "locking up the back brakes", but I would recommend getting the sleeve replaced as soon as you can. The caliper itself can start getting wider too. The less slop you have, the less chance of something failing premature.

If the "sleeve" is not in place, the torque action of your caliper may knock off the mounting post..... Don't want that to happen!!!

Hope this helps.
