just wondering how many gallons of fuel you run through the bike before you put synthetic oil in after a break-in?

what I usually do is do 2 oil changes on factory oil every 3 tanks
then put in the synthetic! I change about every 5 tanks .

After a few weeks and about 5 tanks I switched to Amsoil full synthetic. Noticed an instant power increase too. I would recommend doing it soon. Super slipery=Less wear= More power:macho

my local shop said that synthetic can cause clutch slipage..since the oil also lubes the clutch gearing ect... so i have been using regular honda oil.....what do yall think bout that??

The only Mobil One full synthetic that you can run on a motorcycle is the one with the Red cap (15w50). It is the only one without the friction modifiers which cause clutch slippage. Any other Mobil One would contain those friction modifiers which were intended for automotive use, causing your clutch to slip. Fully synthetic oils intended for motorcyle use are fine to use on your quad but if youre using an automotive full synthetic oil, make sure to check if it contains these friction modifiers. Sorry for the long post, just had to clarify because there has been much confusion on this topic in the past.

well i don't have that many tanks through the bike yet. i only have ran 6 gallons of gas or so through it.

I really think that if you have ran 6 tanks of gas with petroleum oil or a semi-synthetic oil through the quad after break in, that you would be completely safe to switch to synthetic. I was wondering the same thing when I was breakin in my rebuilt motor so I asked Laz Sommers at GT Thunder and he said that one or two tanks of gas on conventional oil is plenty to allow sufficient break-in. It's really that first 20 miles or so that is most crucial to allow your rings to properly seat to the cylinder. Mobil One red cap all the way!!

yeah, i thought so so. however, i only have 6 GALLONS thru it, not 6 tanks. i do agree that 80% of the ring seating takes place within the first 20 miles. and i know i go much more than 20 miles on a couple gallons of gas.

Ah, my fault, I misread your post. I thought it was kinda funny to be wonderin if it was ok to switch to synthetic after 6 tanks but thats not what you said. My mistake. :p
But still with 6 gallons through the quad I think that you would be safe cuz its basically 3 tanks or so. It of course won't hurt anything to wait a little longer though.
