does a 450 timing chain work on a 01' 400ex

Is this 100%. I have a 2001 400ex and was looking to upgrade to the Heavy Duty timing chain. Now people tell me the 450 chain is the same as the Heavy Duty.

Does this work?
Do I need to replace Sprocket?
Is it for sure more Heavy Duty?

also, the price difference was unusually different and I'm wondering if its correct.

trx400ex:

$65 to $26

A few months ago I replaced a stock 65$ chain that broke (due to previous mech. fuc! up) with the 26$ CRF 450 chain on a 440ex and it seems to be working fine. It has been raced many times since and is not showing any signs of future problems. Do a search, there is a real good post on this somewhere. Some say it is a great upgrade, and some say it won't even work. A few even stated that the 100$ heavy duty 400ex chains sold buy race companies are the exact same 26$ chain....I don't know this for sure, but wish I could see their 100 dollar chain to compare.

I do know that the CRF 450 chain is much stronger in appearence, and worked fine on this 440. I did not replace either sprocket since they looked perfect

these chains do work. my buddy and myself are running them right now. however, some say the pitch of the chains differ. it is definately thicker than the stock one. i am running the stock sprockets.

just as a note, the chain we are looking at is the CRF 450 dirtbike chain. i don't know anything about the 450R timing chain.

Works! Just make sure that the chain guides are in good shape and the sides (rubber part) are not broken or breaking off.

The CRF works good the TRX450 chain is longer and will not work.

Sorry for double posting back there, I've just been in kinda a hurry and needed answers, its hard to trust people local somtimes. Plus this way is more current that others.

thanks a lot for the info, I allready ordered the chain. Much cheaper and hopefully stronger. I post replys after the install. I'll try to take some pics also to compare.

on a different note:
I'd still be curious about the profab and other heavy duty chains if this one is accually larger. I knew that that chain width had to come from somthing. I think it would be far to expensive to have a company make an new product like that. I figured they were borrowing that chain from somthing. At the most I'd say they find the chain, and ask a company to resize it in length. Or mabey I should of put my foot in my mouth. Mabey they did do all that work? we'll see

You made a good choice by getting the heavy duty CRF450 timing chain. I have one on mine and have had no problems at all. Just wanted to let you know because I posted just like you before I bought mine. Good luck!
