I had a buddy of mine tell me to check the swing arm bearings in my 400ex because his went out of his and it broke the swing arm. I always checked the bearings in the axle and checked the swing arm to see if everything was tight, boy I was WRONG!
It took me a hour to get the swing arm bolt out. Then once I had the swing arm out, what was left of the bearing hit the floor. The one side had the bearing completely gone and the hole in the swing arm was egged out. So my swing arm is junk.
I got all the guys in my area all nervous about theirs. We tried to take one out of a '99 and everything is seized up.
I got lucky, one of guys bought an '02 and put a +1-1/2 Houser swing arm on his. So I bought his for $100.
It looked like to me that all Honda did was put some oil on the bearings when they installed them.
My advice to everyone is to take your swingarm off and grease the bearings and bolt. Be sure to check the linkage bearings also, because I had two of them out also.
Be careful taking the bolt out because it is hollow!
