I dissagree, its really not that tough, there is a very strategic science to it though, take adleast a day just reading up on everything on porting on the internet, PMing ppl here on the site that know what they are doing and if you can talk to someone thats done it before and bring your cylinder and ask then what they recommend porting more/less in diffrent parts. I'm only 16 and I've ported and polished a 2-stroke twin motorcycle, a banshee (my previous quad) , a trail blazer 250, and my 416ex, all with Awesome results! But I worn you, if you just start grinding stuff, you can screw up your motor very fast. Take your time, on all of those engines I took 4-6 hours straight porting. If you do, go for it, when your done, you've just learned something compareds to sending it off, and spending the big bucks, and if you've researched enough you most likly did equally good of a job.-darren

the port and polish jobs ive seen run around $200, but those include replacing valve seals, and some other stuff.

I also think a novice can to a decent trail port and polish.

Its going to be no where near what a pro can do, but I've did mild ports on a few 2 strokes. And I don't know much what I'm doing.

Just dont over do it or ur screwed.

Dont chintz on porting man. Porting is the defining mod that sets the engine builders apart other than their cams. Yeah, you can get your cylinder bored locally, you can put the cam in yourself, and all that, but when it comes to porting you really should send it out and get it done by a professional engine builder. Most spend alot of time testing to perfect their port jobs and many use a flow bench to get accurate results every time. If youre set on grinding your own ports then hey, knock yourself out, but porting is something I always have, and will leave up to the engine builders....

i agree completely with TC426ex, you can really screw up a head if you dont know what you are doing, especially if you try to mess with the intake

i beleive gthunder does a full race port for 200 bucks. and you'll spend that anyway if you mess up and have to have someone else fix your work!

also remember that if you port to much you'll have only top end and no bottom end, and there's no way to go back on porting. Once you've removed the metal it's gone, so if you jack it up, then you just cost yourself a new head.

For the little bit of money it cost to have it done right why would you risk it..? Basically if you don’t do it right the first time then you’re going to end up spending more money in the long run fixing it. But hey it’s your head…

How much more power will the port and polish add and will it give more power on just top end or all though the power band. Also how much would you have to go up on jetting?
