is there anything i can do to a 400ex to make it go faster without buying anything?

Hello el-cheapo, just kidding!:)
1. You can take off the air box lid.
2. Check to make sure that your throttle is opening all of the way. I have seen some quads that have had theirs stop a little short.
3..If you know someone that can rejet your carb, you can go faster. From factory they are set with around a 5-10% safety margin. They richen up the fuel a little to make sure the thing doesn't blow up off the lot.
4. You can also remove the choke from the carb.
5. If it is used, then you definitely want to adjust the valve clearances.
6. check and make sure your brakes are not binding
7. oil your chain
8. make sure wheel bearings spin freely and are greased.
9. I am not recommending these options--> however:
9a. remove the emergency brake
9b. remove tail light
9c. remove headlight assembly
9. d Anything else that is not 100% necessary on the quad to save on weight.
10. run good gas.


Here you go---> you should have someone that is real good with engines do the carb work. They are a little tricky and if you mess it up, then It WILL ruin your engine

not free, but cheap mods include:
1. change your front sprocket
1a. 1 tooth down in front for wheelies and better acceleration
1b. 1 tooth up in front for top speed.

2. change spark plug to non-resistor type
3. buy race gas (If nothing else- it smells tough)
4. get better air filter

What is changing the spark plug to a non-resistor going to do? And why would you buy race gas if it's not needed??:confused:

1 race gas is worse for a stock engine, it makes it slower and it costs to much, you need a higher compression to run race gas
2.(cheap not free)XR250 cdi box, same as most high perf aftermarket ones, lets it rev higher etc

Maybe you should try riding it. Remember.....practice and seat time can make you faster.


Exercise and lose some flab. Physics 101: the less weight to move=less resistance=more speed.

Very true! I've lost 25lbs over the past few months and I can really tell the difference when out riding, I can go longer and faster through the trails now. Added at least 5 HP!:p

put any and all stickers on your quad. you can expect around 1 rwhp for every sticker you add so get stickin! LOL

If you have a dremel tool, you can grind down the welds on the inside of the stock headpipe. It's not much, but it is "free".

my brother left his in and my friend took his out, they went down the road topped them out and top speed dropped with takin it out, we had a cop(our friend) clock us it was i think 56-57 with it in and 54-55 with it out, he never realy notinced if it had any more hit at the bottom so he put it back in, but that was on a 300ex not a 400 so i dunno

huh?anywayz yea just buy an exhaust and if you even thnk about a cobra, do me a favor,shoot yourself cuz they just plain out suck and are to loud and give like no poweri think its like .2 hp on a 350x :p

and you cant notice the power difference cuz you dont want to open it up cuz its such a cheap loud sound, at least an LRD or Yoshi it sounds good(but ya pay for it)
