as far as what the plans are for this R-

well we are turning it into one badazz TT / Flat Track quad. so far the parts list will include:

Burgard Chrome +2 A Arms
Burgard Chrome Stem
Burgard TT -2 Chrome swing arm
LSR Chrome axle
All small parts chromed'd
Lots of powdercoat'n
Hipers all the way around (black rings)

Im trying to get my hands on some sway bars. Hopefully Rath will come thru for me and hook me up. Other then that who knows what i'll do. If i can get it done before the winter closes the races down maybe i'll dive into the engine to give the bark some bite:devil:

so pappy ur going to try out TT as i understand.....but what about xc??

Pappy
08-26-2004, 06:52 AM
XC is kind of hard for me simply because Im usually too busy shooting pictures to race. I dont do MX because of my back problems and i'm not a huge jumper so TT & Flattrack appeals to me. I just like getting into new things that offer a challenge!

TRXMaddness

scott, you work out a deal with pappy and get enough powder to do your rims, i'll bake em for yah http://www.exriders.com/vbb/images/icons/icon14.gif

we really don't have any blinging colors here other than chrome, silver metallic, penny vein, and silver vein, other than that all we stock is mostly standard colors and bout 20 different blacks

Cool. I'll get the ball rolling soon. I'm going to need tires anyhow.

Pappy I'll send you a PM as soon as I have the extra cash to do the rims. BTW I can't wait to see your quad low and mean:bandit:

How well will the pc hold up to regular driving? The wheels were clear coated and it is already cracking after about a year so I'm hoping the PC will hold up better. Thanks for the info.

UglyMotha™
08-26-2004, 11:26 AM
it should but i dunno how well of an exterior paint gun metal is perhaps kenny can fill you in there, i powdercoated all the undercarriage on my truck and it's held up to some nasty abuse so far, and i had the calipers on my car done in winchester red and 4 years later they still look like they were just done, so they have stood up to 4 winters of salt, that's what i thought would kill them but they still look like new, but then again i've seen alot of powders look like crap a year later, so it's hard to say, since your rims have a clear coat on them you'll need to take em to banks there in lagrange and have them burned off, since we work with everything new here, we don't do sand blasting or anything like that, and what we do do, we send to banks

Pappy
08-26-2004, 11:30 AM
id suggest clearing this color (it brings out the color and depth) and it should hold up fine.

300exOH
08-26-2004, 11:33 AM
Yeah I figured I would have to have them sand/bead blasted first. I figure it's worth a try to pc the rims since they are looking like crap now. I can always redo them now and then.

I'll let ya know when I'm ready.
Thanks bro:devil:

yea i can understand how xc racing would be hard.....and mx would be hard for some 1....because simply if you have to go to work on monday to put dinner on the table....then i wouldnt suggest anyone attempting some of the jumps...and mx is very hard on the back believe me because most of the time (when i ride anyways) im in a standing position on the pegs

Pappy
08-28-2004, 08:29 PM

1st we sanded it down to remove the casting line and smooth the metal. then he spent about 45 minutes working it on my buffing wheels. i was happy with it, it looks really slick in person.

ok its color time.

the frame and hubs will be gun metal, sub frame chrome..arms ..stem and various small parts are at the chromer now. black plastic will top it off.

im stuck on what color to do the calipers and holders, and the brake stay. if i did them in trans blue it would deffinatley stand out but im not sure if that will compliment the "un-busy" look of this R. so im leaning towards keeping the majority of pc work to one color.

any suggestions?

Pappy
08-31-2004, 08:44 PM
ill try and show you what the color will be, its a 1000 times prettier in person.

Pappy
08-31-2004, 08:47 PM
at different angles the color will turn from black to a deep dark silver. it has taken the place of my favorite charcoal metalic as the cleanest color.

That's going to be sweet. How about a very dark midnight blue instead of the trans blue. I think it would make for a nice subtle look.

If you go with another color I think it could get too busy. I wanted the chrome and black look to run though it. Raw or polshed aluminium or silver held the look together.

well spending another saturday sick with this flu, i turned my attention to some small parts. i wanted everything either coated or chromed so that cleaning would be easy and also allow the entire quad to flow together with the current color scheme. i used black mini texture to do the rear master cylinder and some other parts

It's a 450R ???? Chit for all this time I thought you were building a 400ex ... I'm an idiot .

Pappy .... you still have that flu ?? There only one way to get rid of it .... take out the bottle of Crown Royal and down it ..... You'll be smashed out of your tree , but it'll kill your flu . It's a last resort ... but has been something that has been proven to me that works . When we'd get the flu as kids , my grandmother would bring some whisky over and give us a shot . We were like 7 years old at the time . As kids it would make us sleep really well but the next day you'd have no flu . I still do it till this day , if I feel a cold , sore throat or flu symptoms comming on , I take a swig out of the bottle .... usually cures the problem .

i actually felt a tad better today. i split 2 cords of wood this morning and actually mounted a few things on the frame. ofcourse now i have a headache the size of texas but atleast im not feeling like death warmed over.

mounted the WER stabilizer which needed slight modifacation to clear the 2 gussets but no biggie. also mounted the oil cooler.

Rolwrag had the elka linkage also and went with Laz's linkage and said it was much better. Not to take away anything from Elka just relaying info from top racers that have tuned and tested their shocks to the max...

and I still don't think you can handle the motor, you should leave it stock.....

Pappy
10-05-2004, 07:00 AM

No sir. But laz might have to revalve and respring your shock...:(

But he might work a deal with ya cuz I"m sure yo quad will be in a mag or 2...:o

Reason I asked was i noticed the small SSD spring on you rear shock, I guess the 450R's are different than the 400ex, cuz I have a fat arse top spring on my rear shock...

Pappy
10-05-2004, 07:27 AM
to be completely honest rico i never even looked at ot closely. ive grown acustom to my elka's being ready right from the box and usually install them and have no problems. ill look her over tonight tho.

the biggest issue i have with the elka linkage is the skid plate clearence issue. its easily fixed but adds labor to the process.

Shawn H
10-05-2004, 08:30 AM
I'm not Borich so take my Opinion as ya will but I had a Elka and there link and it is no comparison to my Axis and Gt thunder Link.

Also with the elka my air box cracked when my suspension bottomed out so ya have to raise it 3/8" for clearance.

Laz will just have to revalve your elka for his link or send ya the specs and you can have anyone revalve it. I would highly recommend at least trying it you will not be dissapointed. Rico is right!!:huh

lol...I know...but I was just thinking about it being aluminum and all. Chrome on aluminum will crack before chrome on steel simply because the alminum moves or shift more, but im sure this subframe will be fine.

It's going to be a TT quad. No rocks, or trees....not much mud.

Aint found nothing yet that can stand a good smack from a rock yet.

i'll vouch for popo's crap, my cases went thru one harsh season and there's still blinging beyond belief i didn't expect them to be still looking this good, there is just some minor scuffing where my boots rub the cases

so deffinantly good quality stuff http://www.exriders.com/vbb/images/icons/icon14.gif

:eek2: :eek2: :eek2: Pappy if I ever win some $$ ... I'll get you to build my next quad .

Looking at that and now going to see my 450 in my garage , makes me wanna burn mine to the ground . LOL

That's the nicest quad I've seen in a long tome .

lol..thx

i just build them the way i want them and to hell with anyone else:p i wanted this one to stand out but not because fo color. plain jane she be.

i will get a full photo shoot of all areas once she has been finished and fully detailed. then its off to the jiggly room:huh

i love the radial/turf combo. for the type of riding this quad will see it should be just fine. burgard grooved me a set and we slapped them on his beadlocks for the old school look.

there are some trick things on this quad, especially in regards to the molycoating. i shouldnt have any trouble with corrosion:devil:

What type of riding are you gunan be doing with the quad Kenny?

I'm thinking about switching my front tires on my 450 from Holeshots to radials . Ive decided it's not gunna be a race machine .... just gunna use it around the cottage and on the old logging roads . I think the radials would do a better job . Does anyone know if radials will fit on Hiper front rims??

JDiablo
11-08-2004, 01:39 PM
i think it is for flatrack/tt?

Pappy
11-08-2004, 01:53 PM
radials to good on dry hardpack. they arent worth squat in wet, slick areas.

this quad will be used to demo my work ....then it will get the snot beat out of it.

i rode it last night just to warm it up.

i believe im taking out the rekluse since i dont feel i will need it for the type of riding i will be doing with it in its current form.

i am installing the Laker Custom fenders tomarrow night so i will hopefully soon have a new thread and full detailed pics of the build.
