Is wd-40 safe for o-ring chains?

No it isn't. It dries out the rubbers and can deterioriate in the long run. WD-40 can be used on a non-Oring chain. Stick with the good stuff for Orings.

that is what i thought too but some guys at the dunes said it is best for the sand, i think i will stick to the good stuff though-thanx

There are people on both sides of this issue. I happen to be one of the ones that says it's fine. I don't use it all the time though, but any time I know it's going to be really dusty I use WD-40 instead of chain lube because the WD-40 doesn't attract dust and dirt to the chain as badly. My opinion is that I'd rather have the WD-40 on my o-rings than a bunch of dirt getting ground into my chain and sprockets.

Myself and all of team quadshop use WD-40 on our O-ring chains. Most chain lubes are thick and draw crap to the chain and keep it there. WD-40 doesn't do this. Plus changing out your chain and sprocket 1 time a year if you ride hard is a good idea anyway.

Ive used WD-40 for years and never had a problem. Chain lube is just to messy and gets all over the place.

after riding hard today in some mud,i sprayed wd40 on my chain and all that red clay and crap fell right off that chain lube had drawn to it. cleaned the bike up and lubed it w/wd40 again and to me it looks like its twice as good than chain lube.

WD-40 is also great if you get a set of stiff links in your chain, as it helps free them up. It has so many good uses on a quad, like as a water displacer on electrical items, and as a mud release film.

Ive been usuing WD40 on o rings for a long time and I personally dont think anythings better. I WAS using the "good" chain lube and the wax too and will never use it again. As others have said, it attracts dirt and cakes it on there. And if you get some overspray on your swingarm and rear end, forget about it, Cinderella wont be able to scrub it off for you....

after i wash my quad the entire thing is coated in good ol' WD-40 including the chain. sure makes clean up a snap after you ride again

yeah i coat basically everything on my quad with wd40 after washing it, then no mud really sticks to anything. learned that from some sprint car guys a long time ago.

just a thought here, but does anybody know if something like tri-flow would work as well as WD40, without the issue with the o-rings? I think tri-flow is teflon based, but I'll have to check. Any thoughts here?

I just looked at the sites for WD40 and Tri-Flow, and they both claim that their products are safe for use on rubber, so go figure. I've had the same troubles using chain lube/wax, so I'm gonna give the WD40 a 'shot'.

Have fun!

I like to use silicone chain lube. It does not seem to gum up as bad. I also use just a silicone spray lube. on my chain & on my frame. The silicone spay will waterproof and prevent rust & corrosion. Also nice to spay on you electrical. You can get it @ any hardware store. I do alot of riding @ Pismo and the spay helps protect my 400, truck, & toy box.
3-IN-One is the brand I use. Mainly because it is a little cheaper than most brands.

FWIW.... I use tri-flow on the chain and WD-40 on everything else after clean up ..... however if I know I am going to by in lots of water then I will go with a regular chain wax.....

How do you like your honda forman. I am thinking of trading my 03 400ex in on one. Have any problems with it yet. Thanks for the info.

wow, maybe im an idoit, i just use axle grease and coat my chain with it, i do coat everything minus the plastic chain and engine with wd, nothing really sticks to it. i also learned that from the sprint car guys. some of them use wd when they put on decals, they can move the decals around and place them wherever they need to be and then when the wd drys they stick

wd-40 works great on rubber. i use it on chains and for mounting tires installing hoses stopping rust. i go through alot of it and never had a complaint.

I never tryed it but I guess I will have to give ita try. I use tire cleaner on my plastics and it makes them look like new you don't see the small scratches.

You don't really need to "lube" an o-ring chain, they are internally lubricated. What you are looking for is a corrosion barrier. I like stuff like Chain Wax. If you put it on fairly carefully and let it dry, it's not too messy, and it will stay on the chain for a long time.

From experiance, Chain Wax does nothing for displacing water, or preventing corrosion. I've never seen WD 40 hurt orings at all in one season............I use WD-40 on pneumatic (air)cylinders and switches at work all the time to lube the o-rings, and no problems at all.

hi there im not sure that wd-40 affects the o-rings in the chain (i all ways use belray chainlube but get the clear lube cause the white one is a mess) but when you clean your quad spray it in pro-clean after you have washed the mud off and when its dry soak the plastics and engine in wd-40 it makes your quad look new!!!

wow, i started this thread a year ago and it still hanging around!! well in the last year, i have awnsered my own question. wd-40 is the best thing you can use-in my opinion. there are several of us who ride together that all have tried other things and wd-40 seems to be the best all around chain lube.

MadMan400ex

the wd in wd40 stands for water displacement, which is what it does really well, it displaces water. it is great to use after a ride to rinse the crap off of your LUBED chain.

as for the exact question you asked: wd40 is a great choice; if your other choice is nothing at all. chain lube made specifically for o-ring chains is made and sold for a reason. it is the best stuff to lube your chain with. if wd40 was the answer to all lubing needs, the lube specific companies would go out of business because wd40 is alot cheaper. go to the web sites of some of the manufacturers of chain lube and you can find tests of how their products will extend the life of your chain.
