I'm probably buying a 440ex. With this list of mods can anyone tell me if it sounds like a good configuration or not? How much of a difference in power can I expect from stock? Are there any red flags with any of these mods? I'm still new in the mechanics side of things. Thanks in advance for the help.

Mods:
White Bros R4 full stainless pipe, Honda Race Cam, IMS 440 big bore kit, New top end w/ 2 rides on it, White Bros CDI rev limiter, jetted, K&N air filter, Durablue 2+2 axle, front gear down 1 tooth (Renthal)

Sounds like just a very basic 440 kit. Maybe +7hp compared to stock.

Why would anyone go one tooth down running a 440:confused: I personally would stay away from the 440.I am not a big fan of that kit when I can get close to the same performance from a 416 and have room to spare incase of something tearing up.Not to mention reliability.

If the price is fairly good i would get that in a heartbeat. Just make sure that you dont run it to much once the motor gets hot. Other than that i bet that thing really rips.

It's not really my preferred choice of parts, but it will run fine if it's in good condition.

The main thing I would worry about (and you may be aware of it if you've been keeping an eye on the forum) is that the 440s are prone to pulling head studs and blowing head gaskets.

Another thing that I'd probably change is the WB rev limiter. I run one on my EX, and they will work on a 440, but I've always been kinda uneasy about a higher rev limit on a 440, because you really don't need to rev a 440 that high if it still has the stock rod.

Also, I'd plan on a front sprocket change. I'm with Bill Fuller on that one, I don't know why in the world someone would want gearing that low on a 440. You can easily pull a 2nd gear start on a 440 with the stock 15/38 gearing, and even with stock gearing, 1st gear is basically useless except for loading it onto the trailer.

even on my 416 with a cam, piston and slip on i can easily do 2nd gear starts, stock gearing and 18s

Sounds like good advice. Thank you all for the tips.

I have geared my 440 down but only cause I ride woods most of the time. I run either a 14 front and 39 rear, or a 38 rear. Gitty up. Reaper

I added a tooth to my front sprocket when i built my 440. I run through the woods most of the time and still dont have a problem.
