300ex/250x normal play?

I searched for this and only found one vague post, so here it goes. I just replaced my axle bearings and tightened everything up. There is a slight play still from side to side. I'm wondering if it is normal or should there be "NO" play?

:eek: there should be NO play. are you sure you tightened your lock nut tight.

After a 20 min ride the other day the small amount of play turned into a large amount. Could my axle be worn down so that it slides over too far to the right? Has anyone suffered from a worn axle?
