I am having problems with cold starting my bike, I went to my local honda dealer and they said that honda doesnt make a 42 pilot jet and they couldnt track down an aftermarket one, so they ordered a 45 pilot jet and told me to try it and if it didnt work, they will take it back. Only mods on bike are fmf powercore 4 and rest would not effect engine). To get to the point, would I be wasting my time trying a 45?

Honda doesn't make a 42 pilot jet, but Kehin does, and that is who makes the carbs on the 400s. A 45 pilot I think will be too rich for you quad.

I to couldnt get a 42 from the dealer, because I didnt want to wait I put in a 45. My quad now starts easier. Every now and then I feel a slight hesitation at the 0-1/4 throttle range. I would say install the 45 for now till you track down a K42. I run a 165 main, 45 pilot, needle up one, with a t-4 and no lid.

Your dealer probably won't know how to get a 42 pilot jet, but honda DOES make one. All i did was to go to www.servicehonda.com and do a little checking. It doesn't list a 42 pilot either, but if you run this part # 99103-420-0420 it will come up as a pilot jet and it is about 6 bucks. Just give them a call @ 800-828-5498 and give them that #. They will pull it up in their computer and then your set. You also could give that part # to your dealer...and then tell him he's a moron :)

Running the 42 pilot really does make a huge difference. It also allows you to take out your choke plate. Trust me, you woun't need it anymore. I live in ND and go riding when its about 10 degrees out. Three pumps on the throttle and she fires right up.

You just need to find a 21 series #42 pilot jet I bought mine at the local Kawi dealer because the honda dealer didn't have it in stock and Kawi's run the same carb on some of their stuff.

P.S works great I live in ND

That is exaclty why I like to scan all the catalogues myself. If you are tired of dealing with the local shops, call Dennis Kirk. When I went to the dealer to get my 14T sprocket, they said: "Nope, no such animal." Of course, when I left the shop, I jumped on my cell and called one of the smaller "no brand" shops. "Yep, got it"!

Two things I can't stand: Parts guys who don't know parts, and car salesmen that don't know their product.

I put a 42 pilot jet in mine three months ago. It really does make a big difference in cold starting. I had to buy 5 of them to get my dealer to order them. I still have three left if anyone needs one. Just e-mail me at rockosmith@msn.com

Thnaks guys,
I cant get over how helpful you guys are. I gave the products #s to my honda dealer and they said that it wasnt a familiar # in the comp, but it was possible that their comp just wouldnt recognize that #, because they dont stock it. But they did track down an after market one, hopefully it is just as good. Once again, Thanks guys.
