98 Ram 1500 4x4 /w 318

144K on it and still running strong.

only thing i have ever had to replace on it have been the brake shoes, a rear tail light smashed by some vandals, and the steering stabilizer i crunched by over zealous off roading :)

have a 96 1500 with 158000 on it, no motor or tranny problems yet, hope not either.. whatched some truck pulls at the local fair,, hmm dodges out numbered them all and was a cummins that won it all. but some looked good others didnt. very impressed with the Ford V-10,, was right there in the hunt, took 3rd im thinking

Well before I get flamed for this let me make note that I am a Mopar man myself...

Now the last generation of Dodge pickups are notorious for transmissions problems. My dad's went out last month at 78k. Most of our friends with Dodge's have had to rebuild or replace transmissions. General talk is that the cooler is much to small and needs replaced. The new generations I havent heard much about, the ones before that never heard anything about just this 95-02 or 03 dont remember generation. Besides the transmissions I haven't heard many other complaints besides AC. I heard transmissions problems were addressed with the newest models...........

i have been told about this tranny problem before 94-02 years, and yes it is the cooler that is too small...

but, i have not experienced this problem...and only one person that i have talked with with a Ram in the years stated, has had this problem(and i ran into him in a bar)...it's funny, just at my work alone, out of the 27 people that work in my project...5 of us drive Rams :) i have always found that just weird.

I've purchase 5 brand new dodge rams in the last 10 years: 1995, 1997,2000,2001 and now a 2003. I haven't had any problems at all. Take care of it and have it serviced regularly they all last along time.........

no way in hell should anyone ever pull a 5th wheeler with a half ton truck. The smallest truck id ever pull somethng that big with is a chevy 2500HD, either the duramax or the 8.0L nothing smaller. U cant count that on the dodge truck for going. not saying that u were but just to make a note of it

im more of a chevy guy my self:devil:

Just got rid of my 99 Durango with the 318. I had 92k on it. The engine had never really gave me problems, but I had to replace the fan clutch and water pump, that was the only big repair. HOWEVER - the tranny was a peice of garbage, nothing like sitting at a red light having to hold the breaks to the floor because it was stuck in gear and reving at 2500rpms.

do u honestly think the weight of a 5th wheeler is all that good on the engine of a half ton truck? do u think the trucks payload and towing capabilitys are large enough for the size and weight of a 5th wheeler? its like having a plow on a half ton truck, u see the front end weighed down, half ton shouldnt be plowed with, the front suspention isnt met to take that abuse, ever notice on 3/4 or 1 ton trucks, the front end barely sags down? because there built to be work horses. the half ton are basicly light duty trucks. 5th wheelers arent light weight. im sure the rear suspention has been beat towing that trailer, i know the chevy 2500 we had that we towed a kobota tractor around with, had the rear end beat to hell towing that. wasnt made to tow that large ammount.

We had a 97 1500 with the 360 it had 140k on it when we sold it to our buddy it now has 155k and so far nothing has ever gone wrong with it we had to replace the radiator because somehow a bat got stuck and tweaked it. It never dropped a bit of oil on the ground either. Now we have a 2001 2500 Cummins and I will never drive anything else. We got 3rd last weekend in the open class and 1st in the single turbo at the diesel Drags the top 10 trucks where Dodges. We tow a 32' fifth wheel and our friend has a F-350 PSD and he had to hit the propane to keep up his trailer is 8' shorter than ours and our tranny never gets above 160 degrees. He had to wait at a rest stop for an hour to cool off. :macho

SHOCKER
08-17-2004, 09:51 AM
not all fifth wheels are over 30', dude just because its a 5th wheel doesnt mean it weighs 10,000lbs or more

even at 10k, i think my F-150 is only rated to pull around like 4,000lbs or something? i cant remember i just remember looking at the bumper real quick. The only thing i ever tow is our enclosed trailer with 2 sleds in it. and my truck pulls that w/o a problem, but it also isnt that heavy

I don't know why I even read these dodge posts anymore. I think the original question was how long will a dodge motor last. Well there isn't a definate answer alot has to do with how it was treated and serviced. Some people look at a truck as a tractor and these trucks regardless of brand you want to stay away from. Usually if you see a gooseneck hitch in the bed, I'd stay away from it. Sure it could have only pulled heavy a few times or could have hauled alot.
I think snowflake was on the right track titling the post "who has a dodge" . As it has been my experience that generally those who drive something other than a dodge product, "just don't like dodge's". The same could be said about asking a chevy guy about a ford.
Sometimes you just have to make the best decision you can with the info that is available to you. This is one of those times....Goodluck

yeah i mean if someone posted who had a ford people would jump on there saying screw ford go buy a chevy or dodge, i mean il ltake a chevy and dodge over ford any day but i dont give people shiat about it, i mean down here in so cal most people have their heads up their arse and dont know anything, they just go with what everyone else has and say its the best, man down here if everyone was driving a geo metro and someone rolls up in a civic the geo freaks would rag on them :blah: i dont care all i know is i love my dodge and it runs great tows great and i lvoe it and wil treat it great, i mean if ya treat your truck good then it will last forever, i know someone with an old old chevy blazer with 600,000 miles on it 3 engines and 4 trans, the thing will fall apart before it stops running :huh

oh and you guys give me a reason you wont tow a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton, because as long as its not to heavy and within the trucks limit it doesnt matter

 pull your head out of your arse and open your eyes to the world, not all 5th wheels weigh over 10 g's or even 8 g's, my ram is rated at 10,000 max towing, i will never tow that much with it its not good but i can see myself towing a at 8,000 the most to be safe, but not all friken 5th wheels are heavy, im sorry im sounding like an arse and actually being one but stop trying to know it all because ya obviously dont, if anything its better to tow a 8,000 pound 5th wheel than to tow a 8,000 pound tounge trailer, the gooseneck of the 5th wheel is centered right over the rear axle making it alot nicer to tow, and alot better to drive with than a regular tongue trailer
